At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

Lets hope they can do the same when it comes to hard hitting debates in the real world if they ever become president.

I would of thought being the most experienced of the 4 of them they wouldn't need to worry but, there you go.

This is a regular feature of all elections and the comment gives the impression there is some underhand work afoot. As the article also notes Obama got some changes in as well. Parties would be expected to negotiate not to put their candidate at a disadvantage.

This is a list of different debates, mostly presidential, and their formats. There is even a debate format for the Illinois Senate Debates in 1858 listed. 3 hours each!

Does anyone no where I could watch the debates over the net? All I have is RTE 1&2, TV3 and TG4 and I doubt they will be showing them fully. You see, I dont have any of the American channels, so Ill prob watch them on the net if I can.

It depends on who is hosting them. I know the CNN debates during the primaries were up on their website http://cnn.com/politics/. Fox news were hosts of the others but I don't know if they gave access to international audiences.

Apparently you can watch the debates live on http://www.mydebates.org, in association with MySpace.

Judging by the stats there McCain is getting whopped by internet users.
