Greetings all-knowledgeable ones! I need some help. Could someone please explain have i got this right.

I bought a pair of the clipless shoes in Aldi last thursday (http://aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/58_6967.htm) and they state they are Shimano SPD compatible.

Now does that mean i have to buy cleats and pedals that are solely SPD compatible and not SPD-SL or any other variations? What about LOOK pedals and cleats?

What i think I have to do is buy these SPD cleats and something like these pedals

    Have i got it right?
    Thanks

You're on the right track - SPD compatible pedals only.

You get a set of cleats with the pedals though so you don't need to buy them separately.

Yup, those pedals will work. I think this style are easier to use though as they have SPD bindings on both sides, and you can also use them with normal shoes: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=771

I have a pair of the cheaper http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7808

ones on my commuter bike, as I thought it would be handy to have the option of wearing spd or ordinary shoe when going into town or whatever. But the surrounding cage part really isn't very good. The SPD part sticks up slightly, so your foot doesn't sit very well on the cage and it's not particularly stable.

I actually prefer to just wear shoes with cleats in them and walk slowly around. Usually I'm just going into a pub anyway, so can just sit down

I have the exact shimano pedal your on about and I've no problem with them, just spin the pedal for whatever type of shoe your wearing.

If you go for these may I recommend highonbikes.com - I ordered and they arrived within 48 hours of ordering. The postage will push them slightly above CRC's price but they do seem to have them in stock.....

Not really though, they're very uncomfortable for non-spd use, as the binding is proud of the cage. I cycled a mile or 2 with them before (wearing a pair of Merrells if that info is of any use to you) and never again.

I love my Egg Beaters & MTB shoes, I even wear the shoes on days I'm not cycling sometimes.

What sort of shoes are those? Are they really practical for everyday use?

My decent bike came with MTB clip-in pedals, but I swapped them out for n00b pedals as I have no proper shoes. :)

Practical? Definitely. Cleat is flush with the sole so possible to walk without crunching. Sole is soft enough to allow normal walking & running. I don't wear them when I'm wearing a suit, but pretty much any other time. Guess it depends on your own sense of style. I don't have one, so they suit me fine.
