does any1 find webcourses not working on firefox annoying? is DIT so desperate lick up to Gates..IE is crap..its too slow
can we have webcourses working on mozilla please? ignore Gates jealousy or threat of Firefox :pac:

Webcourses works with Firefox for me, Chrome too. Of course, in some labs Webcourses breaks in Galway server.

Here's a simple installer for the borland compiler and scite editor we use in labs. Just download, unzip and run the installer and all done. No fiddling with downloads from studentdistrib and install locations.

Tested on vista/7 and works fine.

I can't even upload assignments to webcourses from my pc:pac:

Microsoft provides incentives to DIT to run their software.
If that wasn't the case, Office 2K7 would not be sitting on the machines.

Whoever thought the 'ribbon' interfaces are intuitive needs a five across
    the eyes in fairness.

    Hello,

Just wondering what the exact story with Communications module is?

Bascially we need 60percent to pass is it?
Are the two assignments 50percent each?

In this second assignment what value of percent is going for presentation and what is going for the essay?

How much percent do we lose if were not present for our presentation?

Finally, if we dont pass communications does that mean we fail the year and have to repeat the year?

    thanks

You need 40% overall to pass any module(unless otherwise indicated)but
you can make this up from both exams and CA.

Make sure you don't fail the module, because you will have to repeat it
in your second year provided you pass most of the other subjects.

You can't fail the year by failing one or two subjects.
Unless you fail 60 percent or more, you just repeat failed exams.

I've ended up pretty far behind in most subjects dues to various reasons.
Any tips etc for getting back on top of things?
Obviously things like going to all lectures and labs are common sense.
Looking for suggestions for books, websites maybe even extra courses.

Also to add some life to this thread I shall pose the usual q:
How is everyone else finding the course so far?
I've heard that a couple have dropped out etc

Its the same as the PBL1 assignment we did. a big report on everything we did.
Access with relationships of the tables yes.
then we gotta do the 5 min presentation on what we did/ how we progressed week from week.

    Stress!!

You might want to be aware that this is a public forum, and lecturers have in the past, and likely still read boards.ie - I've heard stories from classes. :)

I find that plagiarism stuff quite funny; While researching for subjects I've come across identical material to that of the lecturers which hasn't been properly referenced ( I became aware of the intricates of plagiarism through an enlightening Communications module). There is of course the chance that I've stumbled on stolen material but again and again one begins to wonder.....

Sorry..but im bloody confused over here..so if i manage to scrape 40pc does that mean im clear for the year?? What are you on abt 60percent or more? Do you mean 60pc of the modules on the comp sci course?

Oh and by the way lads, the results is up for pbl2..got 69 overall..is that a 40percent without the exams? :S how do u calculate it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

Yep, it simply boils down to having to get 40% of the total for
any subject to pass.So your CA and exams account for 100%
in total, and you have to get 40% of the total marks to pass.

The 60% thing is just a nice way of saying you don't generally
need to repeat the year if you only fail a few subjects. If you
fail more than half of your modules, you may have to repeat.

To calculate your assingment mark where you got 69, it's just:
69/100 * (percentage of overall mark allocated to assignment)

So if it worth 20% of the year, you have notched up 13.8%
already, which is added to your end of year exam mark.

Ah, so basically for the whole addition of the modules, i need to get the 40% mark...
Do you or anyone know..how web development is? It looks like an easy module (then again i could be wrong). I was looking at some videos on youtube, it looks boring as in the syntax is plain and in notepad? Anywhere we can syntax highlighters for web dev..how did you/anyone find it? Obviosuly i mean > 1st years experience

Yep. Web dev is okay, not my fav module but it's ok
if you do the labs. Attending the lectures isn't really
that important. It's easy to do well if you put in effort.

If you want a decent programmers text editor look
into Vim or Bluefish. Vim takes a little getting used
to though so be warned. Bluefish is easy to use and
has auto indentation and syntax highlighting.

I am quite certain eclipse can be used for non Java
work, but it's more of an advanced IDE.

    Notepad is for masochists tbh.

lol thanks..i wonder why we did C for a whole year and web dev for a semester...also i was trying the robocode by myself.since for some reason no one is teaching us as they claimed they would...i think by febraury it would be too late and sudden to learn robocode..so annoying..

but I cant seem to compile the code !! how do i get JAVAC and not JIKES?? Thanks...

Firstly a question: Where are we for these exams?

Secondly, how is everyone set? Comp arch doesn't seem too hard, same with databases. I just hope problem solving is postponed for a decent length of time!
