    what business assignment is this???:eek::eek:

Q+A in Webcourses, we were only told about it yesterday, so you're not horribly overdue yet. :D

To all first/successive year Comp heads.....Borland sucks!
Use a text editor and a 'real' compiler such as gcc.
This will be much easier on your eyes....believe me:pac:

I found the IDE made me a little lazier when programming.
Get into the habit of strictly validating input and using meaningful names
    for variables even if_it's_just_another_int_pointer.

make sure you do bounds checking for arrays and such.
Last thing you want is a buffer overflow. C is a right pain in this regard.
Also if you have any Cisco networking classes, make sure you know some subnetting technique. It will be very painful otherwise.

Just some advice I have learned here:)

OFF TOPIC: Googles archiving of the internet is so cool.

Also, first years really should use Visual Studio. You'll get real error reports instead of a gameshow incorrect noise with no decent explanation or line number.

Also Borland is a load of ****.

First years should use textpad and compile off the command line

You should always initiate your variables.

except when theyre instantly initialised afterwards via some form of input.
Then you can eke a bit more efficiency out of not initialising them at declaration.

gcc lets you away with murder. Worst possible thing to tell a first year to use.

  • Registered Users Posts: 644 ✭✭✭rockmongrel

What a sense of achievement after finishing that ATM thing
Now where can I find this business assignment, I wasn't in on Wednesday or Friday :P

    What would you recommend randomcountdown?
I find gcc far better than borland or visual studio.
Borland uses functions like getch() which aren't even specified
    in the C standard library.

IDE's are not really needed for the small procedural
    routines taught during first year.

Then again, I am bias because I refuse to use anything
without native *NIX support. Choose a compiler based on
    your own individual needs.

Computer science! Its da shingdizzle. pm me, it was my 1st choice last year. Its just about attending lectures and gettin your assignments done on time basically. It is 24ish hours a week, off at 1 on fridays...
Work placement is a key part of the programme and students have the opportunity to take part in a six-month placement with an IT related company gaining valuable work experience.
It is a straight 4 year course whereas computing you may
exit with a Higher Certificate in Computing (NQAI Level 6) after 2 years. Comp science, your more likely to stick with it as you have to do the 4 years, otherwise you'll be a bum with nothing.

I know how it feels with the whole CAO thing but you have until 3-4 months into next year to decide, heck you can change your CAO after the bloody leaving cert so dont be worried about it. just learn them quotes for shakespeare!

    Its up to you

    Computer science OR Computing
Look carefully at the prospectuses and see what you are interested in, what you want to work with and achieve. Go to the Open days, theres one on Dec 6th
9.30am - 2.30pm at DIT Aungier Street. You should check it out!

the reason for this is that boards counts page views based on IP and due to the majority of people reading this thread in college are assigned different IP's depending on what machine they log into it bumps up the page view count.

And maybe its because the lecturer's are reading :P

What a silly assumption to make!

Lecturers won't read this, they so wouldn't know how to...

    Dear Lecturers,

I think you're all awesome. Please grade my stuff with that in mind.

Are you all in DT228? (With the obvious exclusion of people asking about what courses to choose etc) If so why don't you chat in class? Or swap MSN or something? This seems bizarre! Hi Daniel.:pac:

Hmmm....I think you sort of accidentally proved my point. Also the fact that you have racked up over 600 posts on boards in about a year means you must have been posting twice a day or so. So I'm guessing maybe you aren't hard at work at all:p
