I honestly don't think we stand a chance, but it's nice to have made it that far

The judging criteria are on the site.
It's not just design that the judges take into account

According to their site, they rate sites based on a number of criteria which include:

    Interactivity
    Content
    User Interface Design
    Feedback
    Whole Greater Than the Sum

My site irishbeats.net was shortlisted for Best Podcaster, which I'm dead chuffed about. There's some stuff competition from the likes of Nialler9 and Playmix, but hey - may the best nerd win!

Did you nominate yourself, or did someone else?

I often wonder about awards in Ireland, in terms of how genuine they are. Does the Irish Web Awards ask for money to nominate someone?

No. The Irish Web Awards are about as open as awards can get. AFAIR they were set-up more or less as a response to the usual way web awards in Ireland are handled (which is to buy a nomination).

    Check out http://awards.ie/webawards/ for more.
