Did you get a valid copy of Xp with an unused product key unique to each install, or just an Xp disk? If its the latter then don't expect any help from here in getting it activated.

Then it will be the 16(?) character code near the barcode on the back of the envelope.

    valid

Well then the product key should be blatently obvious, it'll be among the packaging

Of course if you see OEM, well then the licence will not be transferrable and must live with the machine it was originally on

A volume licence key is requested when you are using a volume installation cd, which would be for business, schools, and government etc.

A standard oem / retail product key will not work with that cd.

How is your product key valid, did you purchase a retail version of xp?
