Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I can see where you're coming from, but one of the best things about the WC is that it's the only time every part of the world is connected to the tournament in some shape or form.

How do you get the same level of enthusiasm for the biggest football tournament in the world if all want to do is copy a EC except throw in the odd Brazil, Argentina etc, and shutting the door on entire continents in the process?

Like I said, I understand your concerns, but it is a WORLD Cup, and even if the quality might not be as good as it could be, all parts of the world need to be accounted for.

The standard of football in flagship tournaments has been diluted beyond all recognition in the name of money, and it's an absolute disgrace.

You have to hand it to them though, their marketing machine is working a charm.

Your other points have some merit, but the 16->24 decision has very little to do with money.

The sponsors will pay the same amount as they currently pay, so the overall sum generated will be divided between more UEFA nations than previously, hence this is a very bad decision for the top nations in Europe.

Ironically if they had voted to reduce the competition to 12 teams then your point would be more valid.

The Continental Champions, and perhaps runners-up, from each of the continents would be allowed entry, then a kind of seeding system.

    Europe x 2
    SAmerica x 2
    Asia x 2
    Africa x 2
    NAmerica x 2

    that's 10.

You then add in two more from Europe and SAmerica, the other semi finalists, and the semi finalists from the other continents play off for the other two places in a pre-tournament qualifying round.

Sixteen teams, with a good representation from all over the globe.

    A proper World Cup.

    What?

24 teams = more games = more advetising revenue generated from sposors.
More games to sell to TV companies.
More merchandise sold in more countries.

Every decision made by UEFA/FIFA has money behind it.

You are incredible naive if you think otherwise tbh.

So you'd only allow 4 teams from France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Holland, England, Czech Rep., Russia etc while keeping teams like Japan and Saudi Arabia in it......and you think the quality will IMPROVE?!?

Go back to a 24, or even 16 team WC and an 8 team EC..

Ireland played in an 8 team EC.

    Maybe you meant 7 team?

A good representative of who had a good EC 2 years previous to the WC. Have a bad EC and say goodbye to playing in a wc for 6 years. You could have some of Euopes top player never playign in a wc again.

We already have the confederations cup for that, and for whatever reason the CC is not a tournament that garners massive interest beyond the countries involved.

Germany would qualify automatically so, despite having got to the Euro final through largely unentertaining football. This is meant to make the comp more exciting?!!? The Dutch, Russians and Turks played the most edge of seat games last time yet might not even have a place? And who doesnt love a country punching above their weight, ourselves in 1990, South Korea in 2002 or the Aussies in 2006. This idea would all but get rid of this type of thing.
