If it's petrol then it should have the VVTI engine which has a timing chain and doesn't need to be changed.

When did the vvti's get a chain?

The only VVTi to be belt driven afaik was the original Lexus IS.

Yaris, Corolla, Avensis, Camry with VVTi afaik are all chain driven.

I have a 02 Corolla petrol, I'll ask in the dealers at the weekend bout it. I'm pretty sure it's a chain. I'm hitting 150K in mine, and i've def never had to pay to have it changed

    What about the diesel engines?

    What about the diesel engines?

I just left my van in for a t/b change at 133k miles. The previous one was done at 66k mls and I was told by a mechanic that it should be every 50k mls.

Anyone have an idea of how much for a timing belt change incl. labour ?

    What about the diesel engines?

Early 2.0 116bhp D-4D engines were belt driven to my knowledge. The 1.4 D-4D and newer 2.0 126bhp D-4D diesels are chain driven as far as I am aware.

The changeover was in 2003, I think.

What about the older engines in the previous models? Was it just the 02 on vvti's that had chains?

    Yaris from 1999,
    Corolla (facelift) from 2000,
    Avensis (facelift) from 2000.

All of these engines (except the Yaris) have been carried over to the current models to my knowledge.
