Five, of course, gotta be able to do series/parallel switching on it. They'll make it any way you want, tonally or otherwise, I asked him for one as close to the originals as possible. I even took a resistance reading of the good coil on the old one and had it made to that rating. :)

Well, it's all wired up and working as planned, thank ****. The Armstrong pickup is a little bit darker than the original so I put it in the bridge and moved the original bridge pickup to the neck. As a result, the wire is a little shorter and I can't route it around the cavity as I'd like, but everything is in and it works so happy days. I had to route a little bit of wood out in order to fit both 9V batteries in, one on top of the other. Well done to Lidl bringing out that hand router tool at just the right time :D

Now to the setup. How you setup an instrument is largely down to how your own preferences. I'm stringing this one with a heavy set of flatwounds so I don't want high action or it'll be very strenuous to play. The string under tension will be a straight line so in order to see how the neck is bowed, hold the string down at the first fret and the last fret.

    aria26.jpg

I like to have it almost flat, with maybe the width of a business card between the bottom of the string and the top of the frets around frets 7 to 12. Any flatter and you need to bring the action up to stop fret buzz on the lower frets, any more of a bow and the action is just a bit too awkward.

    aria27.jpg

Apologies for the ****e pic. Anyway, I've set this up with the strings about 2mm above the 24th fret. Low enough that you can get some dirt when you play hard, high enough that it's crystal clear when you lighten up.

    aria28.jpg

The pics I took of setting the nut were crap, so you'll just have to take my word on it. I filed out each slot, brought the action down nice and low, not quite zero fret low, but just a teeny bit higher. If you're going to lower the nut, leave it to last, after you adjust the neck and after you set the action, you can't undo it easily so make sure everything else is done to avoid any nasty surprises. There was no way I could think of taking a pic of setting intonation that would be in any way interesting, so we'll move on. Since the strap button on the upper horn of this bass faces upwards a little, I've installed a set of Dunlop straplocks.

    aria30.jpg

    And that's it. Done.

    aria32.jpg

Despite the crap condition it was in when I got it, it has really exceeded my expectations after the work done on it. It plays like a bastard. Excellent.

    aria34.jpg

It sounds super fat with the flats on. The preamp combined with the serial/parallel switching, combined with the blend rather than the three way switch gives it a massive range of tones.

    aria35.jpg

    The oiled neck is quick.

    aria36.jpg

The rounded edges make it really comfy to play. It feels great in hand. Capped with a nice low action these are great, great basses.

    aria39.jpg

It all makes for a great playing bass, which cost just under €500 all in. Less than a Mexican Fender. Woo hoo!

    aria29.jpg

So ends the little diary. Hopefully yizzers have got something out of it. Cheers for everyones positive comments. Never be scared to pick up a beater and take a chance, the results might be very pleasantly surprising and it can be fun to do as well incredibly frustrating when you wonder why the wiring isn't working... again :p

    aria31.jpg

    Rock on! :)

Well done man. I've been reading this thread from the start and I have to say even though I've never picked up a bass in my life I'm immensely jealous. Looks like very clean neat work and lots of useful tips in the thread.

Cheers everyone, glad you enjoyed it. It was fun to do, the electronics was a bit tough at times, but it's worked out perfectly in the end and a great bass is the result. I'm chuffed with it, it was in ****e order when I got it, just through neglect, so for it to play and sound as well as it does is most enjoyable.
