According to Damien Tiernan on Twitter, the WIT president is leaving to "take up new job as Special Advisor with Dept of Education".

No link unfortunately, maybe someone with access can provide one.

Hmmm... well well well... it's all getting very interesting.

Is that the newly appointed Mr Langford?

    Its Dr Ruaidhri Neavyn.

So does that mean he is going to oversee the University of Waterfords creation or has he merely been bought off?

What Waterford needs is someone in Department of Transport not Education. With all these bus and train cuts the town will be like The Alamo soon, cut off from everywhere else!

What train cut's, the bus cuts are completely cancelled out by the additional 9 daily DublinCoach service!

What I have heard is he is gone on secondment to the HEA but his term is up next year anyway and there is no chance of him getting reelected as he is a deeply unpopular character. So in fact the has jumped ship from WIT ,but im not sure what this means for the TU debate.
I know there is a feeling in WIT the he was an cuckoo in the nest being ex president of Carlow and he wasn't working in the best interests of WIT. In fact he signed the memorandum of understanding with Carlow along with the ex chairman in the Autumn without consulting the executive and other management. This was one of the reasons the whole thing went sideways before Christmas. Hopefully they will elect a new president who will stand up for WIT and Waterford and not be bullied into this disfunctional shotgun wedding with Carlow by the politicans

It won't happen but it would be interesting to see the reaction if some benefactor popped up and said I'll fund WU for its first five years (enough to get it fully established).

It happened (in a manner of speaking) for UL - Chuck Feeney and Atlantic Philanthropies gave a ton of money to the university.

    Oh to have their luck...

Any idea who's replacing Dr Neavyn?

FFS both probably appointed by the Minister,!! This whole debacle is the most blatant display of political interference and F**king parochialism I have ever seen.

Presumably this position will be externally advertised with someone appointed in the interim while the recruitment process is underway?

The good thing is the process has to follow the standard civil service recruitment procedures. So the minister can't just de facto appoint someone.Standard procedure would appoint an internal caretaker , start a recruitment process and have a new president in place for September for the new academic year.

That's a fairly simplistic view. The Minister always has influence. No third level elevated position goes without the political nod.
The new president has probably already been identified. The whole move sideways has been well planned.

For an 'identified' President, is there any sign of an appointment?

Don't know, the loop on this will be very tight...

Two of the WIT most powerful men have been moved sideways...This has happened before in other IOT's...in very subtle ways sometimes and not so subtle ways other times...

WIT have now lost their last two Presidents in less than straight forward methods.

WIT will then have had 4 presidents and 3 chairs in less than 4 years. Losing one is unfortunate, 2 careless and any more than that, well that's a real reflection....

Word is its an internal only appointment to fill the post on an interim basis till 2017 when the seconded presidents contract expires. There is a very strong job criteria so there are very few individuals internally who have the qualifications needed for the post . Its going to be one the members of the executive board , just a question of who now.

So if this is an interim until 2017 and then the interim is replaced, that'll be 5 presidents in 6 years. Not great for stability, governance and management.

Very true, I think the colleges hands were tied by civil service rules on secondment and so they have to wait out the ex-presidents contract.

Are you going for the job yourself?

Although anybody off the street could have done a better job than Ruaidhri Neavyn.
It stinks to high heaven that he got moved on to another high paid job in the HEA as a special advisor on TU mergers when he didn't even get the merger between WIT and ITC out of the starting gate.
But being incompetent or having no leadership skills or personality doesn't seem to have stopped Ruaidhri Neavyn getting that job.
