Don't know where you are getting that from , all of the universities have bars plus AIT aren't looking for University status

Shouldn't be a bar there to start with.

Been attending the college for two years. That the reason we were told college bar closed. And the link above will tell you about AIT becoming a university.
That seems a bit strange , AIT are at least 5+ years away from TU status if ever as the whole process is so discredited.( they haven't even picked an another college to merge with which is necessary under the TU legislation so it looks like a pipe dream) The DIT , Tallaght IT , Blanchardstown IT merger looks like the only one that has a real chance of success and DIT have plans for an new student bar in the next phase of development in Grangegorman so the whole story seems fishy. Looks like AIT made up the TU story to shut the bar down.

Rayr, not that I don't believe you but the names on the website (which have been updated to include new president) don't include her? Strange that the financial controller is not on the executive?

    See link

" The Institute's management and governance structures include the Governing Body, consisting of regional and institutional stakeholders, the Academic Council, responsible for the academic quality of the Institute, and statutory roles for key individual staff such as the President. The senior management team - Executive Board - comprises the President (Chairman), Registrar, Secretary / Financial Controller and all Heads of academic schools."

They'll have to close the dome down so if this is true. In AIT they closed college bar due wanting to become a university.

I really don't know where you are getting that from, UCC, UCD & TCD all have on-campus bars and have had for years, The bars serve as much as restauraunts as bars and are intrinsic parts of the colleges as The Dome is for WIT.

  • Registered Users Posts: 957 ✭✭✭comeraghs

If the dome went there'd be a civil war among the muck savages.

Sad to see this kind of ignorant begrudgery amongst a small portion of "top of the town types" in Waterford City, About 25% of WIT students are from Co Waterford & education is the key to lifting Waterford out of the economic mess it is in now.

WIT is not far away from University (without Carlow being added) and between now & the election in 2016 we all need to push hard to get it delivered, Waterford will benefit for centuries if we all get behind WIT now.

my gut is telling me that we should do this one alone, so im hoping you're right in saying wit isnt too far from being and university on its own but i have a feeling this could take some more time than you envisage. hopefully im wrong.

And we need to get this guy out of the equation:

Some students spend most of there college years in the dome. Nothing wrong with it they do some good events there. Sadly I worked through my college years so didn't experience the drunken student life much. I'll go back in a few years hopefully

To be honest, I've been in college three years now, You not really missing much, Ya its great when your 18/19 but as get older you realize ts the same crap every night out. I'm looking forward to see the dome this coming September though. It will be great if WIT makes it as a university.

Wouldn't it be great if present and past students were asked their opinion on WIT's University application not some politician or board members etc. Without students paying their fees the college would not be here. Just reading threw parts of this thread it fells like everything is revolving around the research part of WIT. Students are not being asked their option. It would be fantastic if WIT did get University status but in my option its just not up to scratch at the moment.

Why is it “just not up to scratch at the moment”? What would constitute up to scratch?

I graduated 2 years ago so I am referring to my time spent there.
Course Material. Needs to be overhauled and beneficial to students .
Lecturing Staff. (Not all) some need to be thought how to teach students.
Exam marking should be done externally. (For every college really)
    Proper WIFI
    New Pcs.
Cant park a car after 9.
    Catering Facilities.

All these things are important, but they have nothing to do with whether a university should be set up in Waterford or not. To my mind, the only thing that matters is whether we have access to the same educational facilities as comparable cities in Ireland have. The two closest cities to Waterford in terms of size and regional importance are Galway and Limerick, both of which have universities. In the interests of equality, we deserve the same, simply because we are part of the same republic and pay the same taxes.

To answer the points you raised, I can tell you that my wife went to Trinity, arguably the premier university in the land, and your first three points are as applicable there as they are to WIT. Her degree was way more "theoretical" than the much more practical/job-relevant equivalent in WIT, and she remembers having the same proportion of really sh!t lecturers to good ones that I remember from my time in WIT doing a different discipline.

Wi-Fi, PCs... seriously, just buy a cheap laptop of your own and get a Vodafone mobile Wi-Fi device. Yes it would be great to have the latest and greatest, but it's a public organisation and the government is mired in debt. Go figure.

Parking... ever try parking in Trinity? LOL, good luck! An important issue of course, but it's more an issue for the council rather than the college. They'd be better off lobbying Bus Éireann for better route coverage TBH, rather than tying up scarce real estate with vehicles that are sitting idle all day.

Catering facilities? Important, I agree, but completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. The canteen doesn't do prosciutto on artisan rye bread... tut tut, you can't have a university so!

As Fricatus said there is nothing here that is a reason not to upgrade WIT. They are all just personal gripes that you could come across in even the world’s highest ranked third level institutions and things that apply to all colleges. Not to mention lectures are not teachers and colleges providing PC’s became impractical about 20 years ago!

Exactly parasites does not begin to describe it.... It looks like these idiots want to turn it into some glorified agricultural college. Consolodation is the name of the game until it comes to providing a campus in Kilkenny. It will be the UHW scenario all over again. WIT is as well off walking away this on the principle of the hypocrisy involved. But the good news is Hogan and Howlin could well be lame ducks from here on in due to the formers association with Dennis O'Brien and his totally transparent business dealings "ahem".

In fairness students don't pay thousands in fees for the laugh. They pay to learn or up skill. So what does a lecturer do? Using PC's came impartial? Please explain that one to me, especially IT or Engineering students that need to use specialised software that is only licensed to the college. The gripes I mention above will be mentioned by 80% of students in the college. I never said WIT shouldn't get University status. Just not at the moment.

They also have ITs so the less academic/brighter students in the area can go to college without having to move away. Where are these people from Waterford going to go if there's a uni? You can't have a university in Waterford to cater for everyone when most school leavers won't get high enough points to get in.

So we'll campaign for a seperate Uni;)

This is true. We should have both, though I take issue with your characterisation of IT students as "less bright", being a bright person who went to WRTC and all...

Hmmm... there are plenty of bright school-leavers in Waterford. Those who can afford it tend to go to university elsewhere (which is the "brain drain" that everybody talks about). Anyway, a university will attract students from elsewhere. Do you think everyone in NUIG has to be from Galway for example?

been through, itc, wit, trinity and ucd. still very undecided if wit is up to scratch to the universities but my heart is all for it. been supporting university upgrade for about 20 years now and im still fully behind the campaign. be great for the region. badly needed to i think.

Either have a crap university with about 250 points to get in or have a decent one with around 450 points to get in. You can't have both. The last thing Waterford needs is another education-for-all college where people who shouldn't be going on to 3rd level are attending. A good university should attract the brightest students. The ones with the ability to set up a new multinational company, not the ones who want to work for an existing one. No quality university should offer degrees in nonsense like music technology or event tourism management.
