windows update on my two laptops does not work at home but works at work and in other locations. im now pretty sure its due to the netgear wireless router at home.

ive tried ALL the microsoft suggestions to fix win update, but none work. anyone know what could be possibly wrong, or how i can config the router to allow win update to work?

I don't have an answer for you, but I have had the same problem with a Netgear firewall/router; the solution in my case was to run the cable directly to the modem to get the updates (I use the Netgear for DHCP) , and then back to the NG when the updates were done.

This only happens when trying to run Windows Update via a web browser; automatic updates in the background come through no problems (different port I guess).

it works if i do as you say, plug directly via a cable into my connection and get the updates. but via wireless, updates dont work ,beit via the update tool or the browser.

Hmmm.. I'm not sure so - my firewall is cable only and when I say direct to the modem, I mean my netopia one... Have you tried it with a lower security setting?
