Shut down and restart as you would normally.
ed: if that fails, just press and hold down the power button until it goes wheeeeee pefff . Then, press and release the power button until the laptop goes woooooOO.

Now, are you getting a message or dialogue? If so, what does it say exactly? If not, what on the screen indicates to you that you are in safe mode?
