    Hi,

I hope this is the right place to ask. Have just found this awesome forum and glad I did. Me and the family are researching a move to Ireland. We're from Wales but currently living in Malta. Could anyone offer me some advice on the best places to look? I'd like something coastal (I'm big on fishing), a town relatively close to a city (30 / 40 mins drive or so), friendly to the English, good local schools and hospital. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

    :)

    Craigavon.

Friendly to the English? We are so over that whole feud thing. No hard feelings.

I don't know which part of this is funnier. The actual statement or the 'so over' part.

Good call on Weford. The missus has a house down in Kilmuckridge and it's a fantastic little spot. Only an hour or so drive to Dublin as well.

Another +1 on Kilmuckridge. I used to go down all the time when I was younger. Bloody muck savage chipper they have there.

kinsale, small really cosy fishing town about 20 minutes from cork city. loads of really nice little coves around the place to go swimming and some amazing pubs and restaurants.

They're towns but I recall Salthill in Galway city being voted the best location in Ireland to live in.

Property is expensive, but you've got the seaside and it's only about a 15 min walk from Galway city centre. Loads of amenities. Good schools, parks, swimming pool, and the famous Promenade which runs along the sea.

Jaysus, can't believe my town made the 'best' list! Not to mention Celbridge!:D
I'd recommend Wicklow/Wexford. Nice scenery, not too far from Dublin. Hope you like it here. :)

Ahhhh ha ha ha ha did you really just tell the poor chap to go to Limerick?!

West Cork/Kerry would be my choice....even though it's in my blood to hate all things Kerry, it is beautiful down there and the locals will be even friendlier to you when they hear your accent. Different accent in Kerry=money!

Wow I live in the best town in Ireland!

*Looks around* Really?! It's nice and all but wouldn't put it at number one.

Would agree with Malahide as the best place to live in the country but I'm surprised Clonakilty isn't in there at all - in my opinion, it should be number 2!

My house, in Galway but that's not important, it's my wife's cooking that makes it the best place to live.

    3 Ballina (North Tipperary)
    4 Annacotty

    Wow. Living in between both.

Annacotty? really? I like it and all.... maybe there's an Annacotty outside of Limerick?

And who would have thought a Limerick town would make it top 5.

/runs off to google map all possible annacottys in ireland.

I dunno, near a large city, good schools, good sports facilities near it. There's worse places.

I wouldn't suggest that Carlow's a nice place to live either.

The issue is totally subjective, but I find Carlow depressing, boring, and small (in every sense of the word). It's a very uninspiring place.

That really is below the money-belt.:P

Kerry's ok provided you make sure you count your fingers after you shake hands with somebody.

Did you live in Ferndale or Wolfetone by any chance? The town has some rough areas like any other town but any tourist i have talked to during my barwork say they love the place and wish they could live here.

Just an update and a question.

I'm researching Wexford and Galway. These two seem to be the most highly recommended by you guys. After that it will be Cork and Limerick.

Can you recommend the nicest towns to consider in these places? Somewhere relatively close to the sea or river / lake?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭blue_belle
