A MAN involved in a standoff with gardai for more than five-and-a-half hours stabbed himself in the neck as he was being overpowered by gardai last night.

The man, who claimed he was armed, had locked himself into a van in a Co Dublin business park and resisted the efforts of specialist garda negotiators to get him to surrender quietly.

After the man threatened to harm himself, members of the Emergency Response Unit threw a stun grenade and rushed the van.

The man was overpowered, but stabbed himself during the incident and was rushed by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital with neck wounds.

Late last night he was said to be in a stable condition and his injuries were described as not life threatening.

The man had earlier attempted to make contact with an official from a company in the Swords Business Park, at Seatown Road, in the north Co Dublin town.

The man appeared to be in dispute with the company over the sale of a business, and was reputed to be looking for a further payment of around €100,000. Gardai said he was from Kilkenny but had been living in Waterford.

Staff in several companies in the building were unable to leave on the instructions of the gardai while the stand-off persisted.

One employee said: “We are trapped in here. We have been warned not to make any attempt to leave and have been stuck inside, listening to rumours of what is going on outside, for several hours.

“Our company is not involved. We are here on the second floor and we cannot see the van. But everybody appears to be staying calm and carrying out the garda instructions.”

The man arrived at the business park around 3.30pm and claimed to have a gun hidden inside a newspaper. He made his way to the offices of a company and began to air his grievances about the takeover of his company.

After demanding €100,000 from the company, the man then left the offices and returned to the van to await the arrival of an official he had named. The company contacted gardai, but an officer who arrived at the scene was warned by the ‘gunman’ to move away.

Armed gardai were brought in as a stand-off developed, and they were joined by a specialist negotiating team from the Emergency Response Unit.

Swords Business Park is neither in Kinsealy nor in Malahide, it's in Swords.

isn't the Malahide sorting office in that business park beside Expd8 and Fyffs?

i was lead to believe that the incident happened at that security company which can clearly be seen from the roundabout at waterside hence my assumption the place was in the Malahide/Kinsealy area. pardon the ignorance of my geography I'll be sure to properly consult all geographic locations for correctness in the future
