setting up my network - swicth advice ??

hi

i have just built a house and i have run cat 6 cables into every room from my office.
so lets say i have 12 standard cables comming into my office.
however i also have 3 cables that come in from just under the roof (where i would like to place webcams) and i want to be able to run poe (power over ethernet) for these 3 cables.

what do i need to set up my network?
what sort of switch ? etc etc

If you want POE for the web cams then I guess you will need a Switch that supplies POE - probably a 24 port one as you have over 12 cables

You also need to decide how you are going to connect the switch to the Internet and what you are going to run where....both of the above will do the job, it's just about port density and what you want to spend

why 24 ? will 16 not do ?

It will but it doesn't leave a lot of room for expansion, spending a small bit extra now may save you shelling out again in future if you end up adding more devices.

^^^ 16 port switches with POE available on 8 ports and the last one is an 8 port piece of kit with POE. It appears you can get 16 port switch albeit not with full POE functionality on all ports.

You dont have to go to the expense of buying poe switches .

You could simply run power for cameras from a local source in the attic or over a cat 6 (one wire will power 4 cameras) and run camera over video baluns again 1 cable will run 4 cameras..This would enable you to use proper security cameras. You could even wire a proper ptz camera using a pair to control the power tilt zoom (PTZ)
If you cant power from a local source simply use a pair from the cat 6 to power the cameras... ie one cable will power two camera a two video feeds..
