Iris Murdoch - they'd probably have to look her up.

With her sexual appetite shouldn't that read.."lock her up"? In fairness she didn't really live her long. Place of birth sure but person's input into city or the city's influence on them has gotta be relevant. If not then I'd put Francis Bacon as my greatest Dub. But that wouldn't really sit right because, although born here, he really was a Lodoner. They'd probably have to "lock" him up too.

The Duke gets my vote too.

Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin - as another poster has said - but he also was the son of two people who were very prominent personalties in the Ireland of their day. His father, William Wilde, was an antiquarian and is considered to be the father of modern day Irish archaeological research. He also founded St James Hospital in Dublin. He was an ear surgeon.

Oscar's mother, Jane Wilde - wrote under the name "Speranza" and was one of the Young Irelanders and wrote inflammatory anti-English verse and articles. She wrote for The Nation.

GB Shaw said of Wilde - "Oscar Wilde is a very Irish Irishman and as such a foreigner everywhere but in Ireland". Gets my number one vote.
