Seeing as there's alot of posts recently on here about motors being stolen I was wondering is there a Garda Stolen Vehicle Unit, ie a unit which solely searches for stolen cars and cracks down on car ringing operations?

Yes it is based in Garda Headquarters and is part of the Special Detective Unit + NBCI. (or as the raa heads and shell to sea protestors like to call them "The Special Branch" or "secret police")

Part of their job is calling to unsuspecting owners of stolen cars and seizing the cars leaving the person seriously out of pocket.

However they then return the car to its rightful owner.

There are many gangs in Ireland that steal cars to order. Many have worked as mechanics for the actual manafacture companies and know the cars weak points in relation to stealing them and are experts at removing VIN numbers or transplanting them.

Its not your usual joyrider who breaks into a house to take a m5, impreza or porsche.

On account of their fondness for truncheons, perhaps?

    They wouldnt use truncheons.

They would all be armed and in plain clothes.

That particular drum of yours is going to wear out if you keep banging on it so often.

What would the problem be with using ANPR to track stolen vehicles anyway?

Sorry I take back my words, with over 10,000 errors a day I don't think the NRA would be capable of taking on the job of tracking stolen vehicles. :D

Sorry I take back my words, with 10,000 errors a day I don't think the NRA would last long at this job :D

    :D:D:D!!!
would the gardai be wondering why there is 10,000 stolen cars passing through the toll everyday??

although there seems to be nothing wrong with using anpr in english cop cars it just depends on who happens to be driving in front or behind them,
there wouldnt be much point using that on an overhead camera on the m50!

    Run to da hills

This is probalby as good an opportunity as any to make the following, official announcement.

Shut up about number plate recognition ...it really is getting very tiresome.

We've all got your point by now.

    Thank you !

The UK has a lot higher rate of sucesss because they have had it a number of years with the congestion charge. The UK cops were also very heavy on dodgy plates long before here. Also its only very recently that you could get a fine and points over here for driving too close up someones ar*se.

From Garda.ie see National Bureau of Criminal Investigation

    Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit

The Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit (S.M.V.I.U.) investigates the theft of motor vehicles, plant/machinery and related crime, which today comes under the category of organised crime.Because of our geographic location as an island, it is a fact that our external problems in respect of motor vehicles and plant/machinery theft are associated primarily with the United Kingdom. The primary focus of the Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit is the co-ordination of information and intelligence relating to the theft of motor vehicles, plant and equipment and related crime on a national basis. The Unit also targets suspects, along with maintaining regular liaison with the motor industry, insurance companies, car hire companies, car auctions and with similar police investigative units in other jurisdictions. The Unit also uses the media to assist in preventing motor vehicle theft and associated crime. The Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit is involved, on an ongoing basis, in operations and initiatives proposed by Europol and Interpol. An Garda Síochána has instant access to the Stolen Vehicle Database from 63 countries throughout the world. As a result, the Unit has been able to identify and seize a considerable number of vehicles stolen in Japan, the United Kingdom and to lesser extent mainland Europe and the United States of America.

    From the Sunday Times -

Gardai warning about Polish-led car-thief gang

Since April the gardai have recovered 12 luxury vehicles which had been stolen and sold over the internet by the gang for an average of €40,000 each

    Richard Oakley

GARDAI have issued a warning about a Polish-led gang who are tricking Irish car buyers into purchasing stolen luxury vehicles by selling them for €20,000 less than their actual value. Detectives at Harcourt Square in Dublin said the gang, which they believe numbers five people, are stealing Audi, BMW and Mercedes cars in the Leinster region and selling them for cash over the internet. Since April the gardai have recovered 12 vehicles which had been stolen and sold by the gang for an average of €40,000 each, netting about €500,000. The buyers of the stolen vehicles will not get their cash returned. The gardai have frozen a bank account which was being used by the thieves to cash bank drafts and cheques. They also raided a house in Portlaoise where a stolen BMW X5 SUV was recovered. Detective Sergeant Finbarr Garland said the number of cars stolen in the past six months could be much higher. He said the cars are generally worth €60,000 or more but are sold for much less. He explained that the thieves are stealing the vehicles by breaking into houses and taking the keys. In some cases the gang members carry out the burglaries themselves, but in others they pay young Irish thieves to target specific high-end cars. There are also at least two female gang members who meet prospective buyers and do the face-to-face deals. The gang, gardai say, is led by a Polish national who was investigated for stealing cars in 2006 and was questioned in relation to an incident in which a garda was struck by a stolen car in Dublin.A file was sent to the director of public prosecutions. It was recommended that he be charged with reckless endangerment but he could not be found. Gardai say the man laid low for some time but started operating again in April. Garland said the stolen cars are being advertised on websites and are popular because they have such low asking prices. According to the detective, Irish people are falling victim to this and other internet car sale scams “very easily”. Scam artists are merely copying and pasting existing advertisements and making changes to the contact numbers. “People need to think before they hand over cash for cars in private sales. If a deal seems too good to be true, it’s because it is,” Garland said.

Ouch heard a few lads talk about this over the weekend, one bloke paid €35k only to find out it was nicked  Lost car and cash. It would make you think twice about buying private. Still if its too good to be true then it always is.

There's also a unit based out of Blanchardstown Station, or there was at one stage anyway. I remember reading about them when Cian O'Connors Audi got stolen and they later recovered it.

they have a unit for this...

general ops do it but they have the specialist 2.5 td vectras for persuit driving ( they have the brand new vectras, ith the vxr suspention and chasis upgrades... the old one was shocking )

they job is litterally to shake up criminals... to keep everyone peeking over their shoulders.... and to sweep and any suspects while patroling, since they got that car, in my local area ( 2 gardi stations, one each ) there has only been 2 old bangers nicked, both people caught before the owner knew...

Sucess imvho... considering how it was before.

This supposed quoted Times article is not true, Det Garland has mixed up his facts here in order to pump up his position and the work he does, Basically theres a few gangs running around selling these stolen cars this unit has huge resources but very little imagination to catch these people unfortunately.

Its very simple if your buying a car privately verify were the person lives and works, only pay by bank transfer into the account of the registered owner after you have seen a passport ID, done your checks on cartell etc and are satisfied it all matches up,and were possible speak to the previous owner.

    Red Flags are:

    1. Wanting to deal in cash and meet in a public place as opposed to sellers address .ie. pub car park.

    2. Very cheap sale price.

    3. HP / Cartell checks and Log book not matching in some way.

    4. The seller sending someone in his place to meet you.

    5. Lack of documentation ie Receipts / service history.

    6. No tax / insurance discs.

    7. Seller being vague about previous owner.

    8. Car having no dealer ads around reg plates or dealer backwindscreen ad

    9. Seller attempting to change or postpone arrangements at lastminute.

    10. Dont be afraid to Test the seller, you can ask if they wouldnt mind you taking a photo of them , explain your paranoid and why, if they are genuine they wont mind.

    11. Test them by saying on the day of purchase you will be bringing your friend along whos a Garda to have a look and run some checks, if they become reluctant to meet again or stop taking your calls again youll know its not bonafide.

Dont get too disheartened there are good deals to be had in the private car market that can save you a lot of money rather than going to a dealer, and by the way some so called reputable dealers are the worst offenders when it comes to clocking cars and selling crash repaired stuff relying on the fact they have your trust and youll never check.Hope this helps. Happy Hunting.
