Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Concrete first floor

    Hi folks

    Need advice on on the pros and cons on a concrete first floor against timber.
    Have foundations put in to take concrete but not sure what to do.
    Is it a big job to finish the floor after the slabs are laid?
    Is it worthwhile to put them in if im going for rads upstairs or does it matter?
    Is there much of a difference in price?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    I am presuming here you have conventional blockwork structure and are talking about a pre-cast slab floor as opposed to inverted T-beam and block or a cast-in jobbie.

    The less angles and shapes you have on the structure or on openings in the floor, the less cutting you will have on pre-cast floor slabs and thus less labour costing. After the slabs are laid it is usually a matter of casting on a 75mm screed to finish which can incorporate any pipework for radiators or for UFH.

    The differences:

    The thickness of the average concrete floor slab make up is 288mm including underneath ceiling on counterbattens and screed on top. The similar thickness of the average timber floor make up is 281mm.

    Soundproofing is the obvious major difference.

    Cost difference, I have found that the concrete flooring itself comes in at approximately 20-30% more than the conventional timber floor make up.

    Also, make sure the type of concrete slab you are looking at can be supported on the walls you have, some need 225mm wide supporting walls, as incorporating extra steelwork for supports will drive up the price.
