I'm curious as to whether we have ever had snow fall during the month of October? I recall we had snow many years ago as late as May but i can't recall snow during the month of October. Do any of you recall snow ever falling in October?

I remember one of the Hallowe'ens of the early 90s had snow. It came in the form of showers after dark when the bonfire was going.

We had snow on October 21st 2003. That will be remembered as the time of the thunder snow. Was a transient event here but at higher elevations the snow lasted for a few days.

I can remember that it was a bitterly raw day with frequent thundery hail showers. The headlines the next day read Octobirrrrrrrrrrr!
There were tv3 reporters standing in several inches of snow on the Dublin mountains looking over the city!

there was snow on the 15th of october around the early 90's. cant remember the year exactly.

I wonder is it possible to keep a log for lying snow this winter in ireland. I know that met eireann will keep this for sea level (baldonnell etc) but not at altitude. I'd really love to get a handle on the number of days of lying snow on Lugnaquilla but I dont always have sight of it where I live. there's always interesting threads on forums in UK and Australia on lenght of time of lying snow. Maybe we could do it by highest point in each province??

Out of interest as Lug is in your back yard, when did you first witness snow on Lug last season? A date would be super but month is just as good and i'll search for the date myself and a certain forecast or wind direction i need.

I'm doing some climate research into (RPM) returning polar maritime winds on the Dublin area with winds off the Wicklow Mtns and it's effects on temperature and dews here.

I think your spot on there Artictree.

According to a book I recently read on the Wicklow mts the higher peaks (say above 750m) carry snow to various degrees, on average 30 days per annum. I feel that we still may get that even through recent mild winters. its the depths and temps that have lessened. And lower levels are larger devoid of snow in recent (last 10 years)winters.

A good snowfall, followed by coldish weather can leave snow on the NE of Lug for many weeks. Thats the part that I can see from my house.

Last winter, for most of Feb and March, snow could be seen at the summit.

So could we keep a stickie going on snow cover over 4 highest points in each province for this winter and get a total days cover at the end of the winter?

Am very interested in doing this but I wont be able to contribute as I'll be based out of the country for the next 2 years!

Now that I look at that charts, it was that first week in the year when all the ramping was going on!

It was dry here for those few days but was cold enough for snow. The summit of Lug gets a lot of cloud, even in fine weather, so for those few days it snowed on Lug but we got nothing here at 250M.
