Hey all, My neighbours have asked me to get them a router that will make their perlico broadband wireless in their house (for laptops and ps3 etc, currently they have a bog standrad wired router), i did a search in this forum and checked out some previous threads and there was a router that popped up called a Linksys WRT54G that seems to be discontinued now. Can anyone comment on the below ones i picked out?

they need something that has a decent range etc, because its quite a big old house with thick walls and the more range the better, any help would be brilliant

    Thanks

Emphasise to them before they spend any money (or you spend it for them!) that the performance of wireless equipment in any given situation is very difficult to predict in advance.

Equipment with the 'N' standard will need matching 'n' wireless cards to get the most out of the exras in the n standard.

    The wrt54gl is still available - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3099

If the house is really that big and the walls are that thick it might be worth investigating a router with the wds option http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System

or else go with the 'plug' option which people on here seem to be quite satisifed with so far

Thanks for coming back dub45, the plug option is probably out because they have a laptop (dell vostro with what i reckon is a wireless g card) which moves from room to room regularly and occasionally to the garage which is near enough to the house, thanks for finding that other router, seems a bit dearer than what dabs were charging before which was around 38 euro, if i'm paying the extra for them, i want them to get the value out of it. The other main thing is the playstation 3 they use regulary.

Do you think the 'n' range of stuff would not be suitable for this? (i have eircom at home myself and play alot of online games on ps3, pc and xbox and am thinking of getting something to boost/replace my current bog standard netopia router, any ideas on that while i have you here?) thanks by the way
