    Hi,
Thinking about going here for the first time and was just browsing up and coming things. I see they have advertised XXY and "Man on wire" which are both recent documentaries.

I assume they have a cinema screen in there so.
Do many people go here and what's the theatre like?
    What's the crowd like?

It's grand. The seats aren't most comfortable but they're not TOO bad.

Man on Wire is good. It was on in the Eye until last week. They're showing Persepolis as well. Not as good as people are making it out to be but still worth the watch.

As for the crowd, the odd time you get pretentious ould bats talking what they think is intellectual film-speak but what is actually annoying aloofness that merely distracts those who are trying to listen.

Yeah you can get a bit of the 'film festival' crowd in there. What I mean is the sort of people who laugh much too loud at jokes or moments in the film to show how clever they are and how they really 'get' the film. It can be annoying but mostly it's pretty good in there.

Was actually going to mention the laughing overly-loud thing but wasn't sure if people would believe me.

That in particular is one of my bad experiences from both the Fleadh and the Winter programme in Town Hall.

Out of curiosity would you get the same kind of pretentious people in any theatre anywhere or is is just Galway or Ireland in general?

I love the Town Hall. For a regional theatre they have fantastic plays that mostly show only in Dublin. Went to see the Cripple of Inishmaan there lately and it was great. As for the film club it does have a good following but I'm not mad about it myself... I think it's the lack of popcorn!!!

Theatre-going is a popular way of socialising for the middle-classes so it's a common feature internationally.

But don't let that stop you from going to the Town Hall. As said above, some great plays on in the TH. More people should avail of it.

    G4.

But that's a state of mind, rather than a location, so just think yourself into it for the night and you'll be grand.

Totally mixed crowd from my experience, I used to think I had to dress up (I was young and foolish once) but now I drag myself there if there's something of interest on. I like the film seasons in general but I generally just try book to see the individual films I want to see. They do have a cinema screen in there alright!
