    Hey All,

So in another thread there was some discussion of a thread/forum for pimiping events. Now a forum would bring about more work/more spam/more hassel, so for the moment we're going to have this thread.

The thread will have the date added each week, and posts from the previous weeks may be deleted.

This thread is just an experiment. If it doesn't work/it's too spammy/kind of useless/annoying it'll go. PM PFM/Ape/Myself if you have any thoughts on it.

    Rules:
    (i) All club/soc/SU events may be pimped in the thread only once. Additional posts will be deleted.
(ii) If there is a lot of interest/discussion of the events make a seperate thread. If you're just being a wanker from a society trying to increase interest in your event it will probably be deleted.
(iii)Please keep discussion to a minimum.
    (iv) NO MCD Events.

Jewish society; Cork Festival of Jewish Culture

    Dear all!

Thank you to everyone who came to the welcome reception last night! It was really good fun and I'm so glad we had a good show of numbers. And I apologise to those who did not get the last email, I think it went to your spam folders, but hopefully I've sorted it all out now, and this is going to all the right places.

So for everyone who was there on Friday, you know all about the Cork Festival of Jewish Culture. And for those of you who weren't, let me tell you all about it. Next weekend (the 18th and 19th of October) are the dates, and its basically a festival, hosted by UCC, celebrating the Cork Jewish community and Jewish dance and song in general. The Jewish Society visited the Cork Jewish community last year, and it is a really amazing and wonderful community with an extremely strong history. There are going to be five klezmer bands there, including our favourite North Strand Klezmer Band, so that should be amazing fun. And they are also debuting the film Shalom Ireland, which tells about the history of Irish Jews. It should be amazing fun, and most importantly! the return ticket AND your hostel will be payed for! Yay!

So please consider coming, it will be really great. And there are only limited places available, so tell me as soon as you can. And I know this is very short notice, but I need to know by monday evening, if that's possible. And also I realised that the last event ends late Sunday night, so we'll probably have to get the first bus in Monday morning (6.00) but if anyone has lectures or wants to leave early, they're more than welcome. And also, we don't have enough money to cover the cost of the tickets to the festival, but they're only 15 euro for the whole lot. Here is the programme for the festival:

The following is a description of the festival:
Cork Festival of Jewish Culture will be a two-day event celebrating Jewish culture and the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Cork.
The festival is organized by the Iona Chaplaincy (University College Cork) and the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism based in Dublin.
It will be held October 18-19 2008 in Main Restaurant and Boole Lecture Theatre 1 at University College Cork.

The programme of the festival will include:

    Saturday,October 18th

7:00-7:15pm Opening of the Cork Festival of Jewish Culture
7:15-8:15pm Klezmer dance & Yiddish song workshop led by Vivi Lachs (London), with the accompaniment by the Klezmer Klub (London)
8:30-9:45pm Concert by the Klezmer Klub (London)
10:00-11:30pm Concert by the Fireflies (klezmer band based in South West Ireland)

    Sunday,October 19

4:00-4:45pm Lecture by Professor Dermot Keogh from the UCC History Department on the history of the Jewish community in Cork
5:00-6:00pm Screening of "Shalom Ireland" -
    a documentary film on the
history of the Jewish community in Ireland (esp Dublin)
    6:30-7:30pm Concert by Festival Ensemble
8:00- 9:30pm Concert by the North Strand Klezmer Band (Dublin)
    10:00-11:30pm Concert by Yurodny (Dublin)

Cork Festival of Jewish Culture is held under the patronage of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Brian Bermingham and University College Cork president, Dr. Michael Murphy.

So go ahead and email me back!!! And if you have any questions, feel free to email me as well, just be quick about it!

    Hope to hear from you!
    Assya, for JSoc

Two Events to report this week:

On Tuesday 13th we will be joining the LGBT societies of MUI Maynooth and UCD in the Dragon for an intervarsity cocktail night. We will be meeting at front arch at about 8:15pm and heading to Dragon for about 8:30.

On Wednesday, we will be having a table quiz in the Eliz Rooms (1st floor, House 6 - up the stairs and to the right) at 7:30pm, after which we wil be heading out. I am reliably informed that topics wil include all the usual: music, TV, film, sport (alternative that is), science and of course the obligatory gay round.

    system
12.45pm TTHW Allow scientific experiments to be performed on
    prisoners
1.00pm TTHW Ban websites that glorify eating disorders

Debating Strategy and Argumentation with Luke Ryder- 7pm - The
    Conversation Room (GMB)

The first in our series of Intermediate Debating Workshops will take
place on Tuesday, the 14th of October at 7pm in the Phil Conversation
Room of the GMB. It will be hosted by Luke Ryder, a former Registrar
of the Phil. His accomplishments in debating include Runner-up of the
Irish Times, twice Runner-up of the Irish Mace, Finalist at the Cork
IV, Finalist at the Trinity Dean Swift IV, Finalist at the Trinity
Kingsmill-Moore Invitational, twice Quarter-Finalist at the Oxford
IV, Semi-Finalist at the DCU Open, et cetera.

Luke will be presenting his thoughts on general debating strategy and
argumentation. It's open to any and all interested, and should be an
extremely informative experience for freshers and experienced
debaters alike. The Phil encourages everyone to just turn up.

    WEDNESDAY
Maidens' Rounds - From midday - The GMB
12.00pm TTHW Grant equal marriage rights to same sex couples
12.45pm TTHW Ban the broadcast of recordings produced by terrorists
1.30pm TTHW Require people to work in return for welfare payments
2.15pm TTHW Ban all religious involvement in schools

SLR Committee - 1:30pm - The Phil council room (GMB)
You think we can pull off Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Trent Lott and Dr Cox
on our own? No! We need help from you! The SLR is an informal
committee, which will assist in running the bigger Phil events. It's
designed so that Freshers get the chance to meet new people, while
getting involved with the Phil. Do come along. SLR will be held in
the Council Room in the GMB. It's a great way to get involved,
especially if debating is not your thing.

    THURSDAY

Freshers' Debating Workshop - 2pm - The GMB
Our weekly Freshers' Debating Workshops will now be taking place every Thursday at 2pm in the Phil Conversation Room of the GMB. These sessions should be really useful for anyone new to college debating and particuarly, any of you who are taking part in the Maidens competition this year. The Phil encourages anyone who thinks they might be interested to come along and take part. No previous experience necessary. You should also have a read of the Phil's Simple Guide to Debating. It contains lots of helpful advice on public speaking in general and debating in college.

The Creationism Debate - 7:30pm - The Chamber (GMB)
Does belief in Creationism have any place in public life? One hundred
fifty years ago, Charles Darwin delivered his first lecture on his
theory of natural selection. This marked the birth of one of the most
successful and controversial theories in the history of science. To
this day large numbers of people in the US and Europe refuse to
believe that evolution occurs, citing conflicts with Biblical
authority and evidence of an Intelligent Designer€™. Dr.
Bob Bloomfield, of the London Natural History Museum, and David
Colquhoun, of University College London, claim that it does not. They
will be opposed by David Berlinski, of the Discovery Institute, and
Paul Nelson of Access Research Network. They will be joined by Chris
Stillman, a TCD Emeritus professor of Geology and Darren McCallig of
    the TCD Anglican Chaplain.

    The Cork IV
Over Halloween weekend, The Phil will be taking teams down to Cork
for the Cork IV. All first year teams will have their transport
costs, registration fees and accommodation expenses paid for by The
Phil (because we like you that much!) If your interested in coming
along and experiencing an IV for yourself, just drop Jonathan an
e-mail at dc@tcdphil.com (or sign yourself up on the notice board in
    The GMB)

The Hist (copy and paste from e-mail):

Wednesday Night Debate - Nuclear Power

Our Wednesday night debate is on the motion "That This House Believes Ireland should go Nuclear" proudly sponsored by A&L Goodbody. We have Minister Eamon Ryan, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in the Chair for the debate, which is being co-hosted with EngSoc. Proposing the motion we have Ulick McEvaddy of Libertas and Omega Air, Philip Walton of Better Environment with Nuclear Energy, and John Gibbons, a blogger and Irish Times columnist. On the opposition we have Michael Walsh, CEO Irish Wind Energy Association and Frank McDonald of the Irish Times.

The debate itself will kick off at 7.30pm in the chamber of the GMB.

    Workshops
Every Wednesday, just before the debate, the Hist runs a beginner debating workshop at 5pm in the Hist Conversation Room. It's primarily for first years who haven't debated before, and we'll be heading out for a quick drink after the debate before returning for the main debate.

    The A&L Goodbody Maidens'
The Maiden Speakers' Competition began yesterday, and the first rounds are being held all this week and next week. It is the Hist's competition for novice debaters and the largest competition for first years in college. It's an easy way to get involved in the society, meet new people and learn to debate in an informal manner. Sign up is still open, and the rounds are up on www.thehist.com so please feel free to come along to any of the debates. Email barry - recsec@thehist.com for more information.

    Competitive Debating
If you're interested in representing Trinity at the Cork Intervarsity Debating Competition on 31st October - 1 November then sign up is now open in the Hist Conversation Room. The Hist will pay for all your expenses* (*may not include food, drink, counselling, condoms etc.) so all you have to do is turn up and debate. It's lots of fun, an easy way to get involved in the society, and you get a free trip to Cork in the process.

UCD are holding their Schools' Mace debating competition this weekend (Friday evening and all day Saturday) and are looking for some Hist members to judge. If you're interested in judging, please email our debates secretary Catherine on murphc37@tcd.ie. There will be free food and drink for all involved!

Lastly next week the Denny Leinster Schools' Debating Competition is starting up, so if you're interested in judging please email Niamh - librarian@thehist.com.

Next week we have another pretty busy week ahead of us - In addition to the launch of the Denny Leinster Schools Debating Competition, we have more workshops, more Maidens' rounds and Bertie Ahern coming along to our Northern Ireland debate.

    Judo Week 2

    Hi Judo People,

I hope you have enjoyed your first week of college, and judo training, and if you havent yet come NOW IS THE PREFECT TIME TO START!! Because:

This week we have a guest sensei, Andries Hoogendoom from the Netherlands. He is Kevin "Dutch Kev" Moerman's sensei, and is providing training in judo/ju-jitsu all week long, absolutely free of charge!

He has a 5th Dan black belt in judo, a grade few people ever reach, as well as 2nd Dan in ju-jitsu (I think) so the training will be top quality! All the training sessions will cater for beginners right up to higher grades, so this is a great chance to start if you missed last week.

As he is here for just one week we have added some extra training to make the most of this excellent opportunity:

    Tuesday 1.30pm to 3pm
    Wednesday 6pm to 8pm
    Thursday 7pm to 9pm
    Friday 2pm to 4pm

It doesnt matter if you cant make the day-time slots, as this is obviously lecture time, but if you can then do come along as it will be a great chance to get one on one attention from Andries and the other experiences judoka that will be there.

To recap: this week will be fantastic!!! See you all there Monday, 8pm!!!

    GAMERS Week 3 and 4

    Hi all,

Slightly earlier e-mail this week, to compensate for any potential foul-ups and also to fulfill the endless hunger of the teeming ravenous hordes (That's you! If you find this description unflattering you probably don't want to attend any Department of Education meetings. Oh no he didn't!). We've got yet more events to while away the hours.

In Week 3 we have not one but two.

First, in room 3.19 in Aras An Phiarsaigh - the green building where they pretend to fix your computer - we have an introduction to Go. Go is a Japanese strategy game far surpassing Chess in its complexity. This will be taking place on Wednesday the 22nd of October from about 19:00 onwards.

Second, in Goldsmith Hall on Thursday the 23rd of October from 19:00 onwards we will be running an evening of boardgames. I talked about this in last week's e-mail but all of you social butterflies need reminding in case we get passed up for another bountiful evening of drinks promotions and subsequently sore-headed mornings. As I said before, we've got all the old familiars, as well as the strange and new.

In Week 4 we have something a little special.

You've all played Cluedo, the game of recrimination and unfounded suspicion. You've all heard of murder mysteries, where the idea of Cluedo is taken forward. In a murder mystery you may be taking the role of the murderer, determined to hide your guilt at all costs, or an investigator searching for the truth. We've yet to find a venue for this one, but it will be on the evening of Tuesday the 28th of October. More information coming soon. If you're interested in this please drop an e-mail to trinitygamers@gmail.com because space will be limited.

    So to recap:
    - AN INTRODUCTION TO GO on Wednesday the 22nd of October from 19:00 onwards in Aras An Phiarsaigh 3.19.
    - BOARDGAMES EVENING on Thursday the 23rd of October from 19:00 onwards in Goldsmith Hall.
    - MURDER MYSTERY on Tuesday the 28th of October in the evening. Venue TBA. Send us an e-mail to express interest!

    That's all for now folks,
    Eoin,
    Secretary
    DU Gamers

PS. If you know anybody who is dismayed and chagrined not to be receiving this e-mail, have them send us one. Best defence is a good offence....or something.

Anyway, thought I'd let people know that there's some sort of thing in Purty Kitchen [wherever that is] on Thursday that's doing €2 for all bottles and shots. I may not know where it is now but I expect that I shall come Thursday.

The first reception of the year is on Thursday the 23rd in the Main Lab of the Museum Building. It isn't difficult to find, up the main stairs and take a left, you'll see us.
It starts at 7:30pm, to give us plenty of time to enjoy our free refreshments before moving on somewhere else where we will doubtless be made to pay for them.
It will be a great opportunity to meet other likeminded individuals with an interest in things geological - or possibly just an excuse to get some free refreshments! There will also be some other surprises on the night, which you won't want to miss!

If you're not already a member, you can sign up at the door for €2

    GAMERS week 4 & 5

    Hi guys,

Well that was an exciting week! Between the protests and the usual ramp-up of work that accompanies Week 3, it was brilliant to see so many people at our nightly events. The Introduction to Go in Aras An Phiarsaigh went well despite accessibility issues...in that it was difficult to get into the building. An alternate venue may be found, or we'll try and work something out. The boardgames night in Goldsmith Hall was good fun, and we intend to run one again quite soon. Hope to see more of you there next time!

So what have we got coming up I hear you ask? Well...

    Week 4

On Tuesday the 28th of October from about 19:00 onwards we will be hosting a MURDER MYSTERY NIGHT. This will be upstairs in Cassidy's, and there will be food for the participants as these sort of events are meant to be punctuated with a four-course dinner. Sadly we can't quite provide that but there should be finger food. Space is limited in this game, right now we are full. Those of you who are playing will be sent your invitations by e-mail soon. However if you still want to play do send us an e-mail, and if we get enough interest for a second game we will do our best to run one again very soon!

On Wednesday the 29th of October from 19:00 in room 3137 in the Arts Block our fearless leader Duggy will be running DIPLOMACY, the game of conquest and skulduggery in turn-of-the-20th-century Europe. You take the role of one of the Great Powers and do your best to beat your opponents into submission. Sometimes played over months or years, we will be using a speed version of the game. No prior knowledge is necessary to play, the game itself is very simple. Just bring a head on your shoulders and trust no-one.

    Week 5

On Tuesday the 4th of November we have another ROLEPLAYING GAMES NIGHT in rooms 4050A and 4050B. Last time there were differing opinions on noise. We thought noise was fine, the class going on next door didn't. To solve this we're taking their room from them, so they have time to think about their attitudes and whether they wouldn't like to play Dungeons and Dragons instead. As before, submissions from new writers and volunteers to run games are welcome. A Writers Award will be given out before Christmas to the best RPG Writer of Michaelmas Term, so you all have something to play for.

    And in summary:
    - MURDER MYSTERY Tuesday 28th of October 19:00 Upstairs in Cassidy's. Currently full, but e-mail us to express interest for another game.
    - DIPLOMACY Wednesday 29th of October 19:00 room 3137 in the Arts Block.
    - RPG NIGHT Tuesday 4th of November 19:00 rooms 4050A and 4050B in the Arts Block.

    See you all there.

SWSS will host a discussion tomorrow on 'Is Human Nature a barrier to Socialism?'
At 6pm in Room 2.03 in Aras an Phiarsaigh

Socialists argue that it is both possible and necessary to construct another kind of society, in which resources are shared equally, that is free of war and racism, and which is run on the basis of genuine democracy.

But we come up against an argument that socialism is impossible to achieve because human nature is inherently selfish and greedy. We say that the very process of struggling to change society transforms those who get involved in it.

So come along to hear some of the arguments and join in the debate.

^^ Just taken from an email, but that's the gist there. Should be an interesting one, it's certainly a topic that gets brought up whenever I'm arguing politics with people...

Just thought I'd post a small announcement about the Rowing Colours race between UCD and Trinity this week.

The race will be run this Thursday April 16th.

The races will go from Sean O'Casey bridge (two bridges east of Butt Bridge) to the Eastlink toll bridge a distance of 2km. There will be open top busses running for the Senior Men's and Senior Women's races 10mins before the start of each race.

    schedule is:

    Gannon Cup (senior men) 18:45
    Corcoran Cup (senior women) 18:20
Dan Quinn Shield (novice men) 18:00
    Moorhead Trophy (novice women) 17:40

Most of you will be finished college and may be in town at that stage so why not head down to the liffey and watch the races. UCD supporters will be out in force so we need all the support we can get. Thanks and we hope to see you there.
