Is it just my German book or do we actually have to learn this?

I'm doing both French and German and the difference between the two as academic subjects is striking. In French, we prepare essays over whether we prepare the cinema to the telly. According to my German book 'Sprachschtaz', we're meant to be able to talk about the economy, war and European politics. I'm just 'shockiert'…
