New Sky+ Subscription Phone Line Question

    Hey All,

Sorry if this is a dumb question but its my first time getting stuff like this sorted out so I need some help!

Basically I'm after buying a house. We're all moved in and I rang Sky yesterday to get the sky setup.

I went for the Sky+ multiroom offer which is basically a Sky+ box in the sitting room and a standard box upstairs. When I was signing up the guy (who was very good over the phone incidentally) asked me did I have a working phone line in the house that could make and receive calls.

Now I'm after moving into the house and the previous owners left a note saying they had transferred over the account to our name. So we have a phone line and presumably an active line but do I now have to go and pay for a basic eircom package just to get sky installed??! The engineer is coming the 13th so I better get moving if I have to activate the line or anything.

Also if anyone else has some useful tips that I mightn't think of before getting the dish installed I'd appreciate it.

    Cheers

If you live in a UPC area, I'd opt for UPC, You don't need a phone line from UPC to get PVR or an additional box!

    Multiroom is cheaper too - 8.50euro/month against sky's 15euro/month

You don't have to have an ugly dish

You don't need a phone line

You can also get a pvr box!

If you get multiroom you have 15euros plus eircoms 25euro/month charge costing 40euro per month! - if your not subscribing to the premium channels its cheaper to just pay the full price for extra box!

if they transferred the account surely it's active already?

you can pay 37.50 extra for subscription without a phone line altho i think they won't give multiroom without the phone line being present.

I have the telephone line from my digiweb bb router connected to my sky plus box and it works with it

Bugger, so what you're saying is I have to get the phone line setup to make calls to get the Sky+ ?

Balls, I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do that but without wishing to offend anyone I really do hate UPC. Any dealings I've had or any of my close friends have had with them have been terrible.

Time to make a decision I reckon!

Ya that's what I would have thought myself. I may just take work phone home with me and see if the line is active.

That broadband thing is interesting though. So basically what you're saying is you just have a telephone line connecting your broadband router to your Sky+ box and that works fine?? Does that mean you can make phone calls if you hooked your phone line up to your broadband router?

Digiweb metro service includes a phone line which, I suppose using Voip tech, allows one to use it as a phone line (when the router is powered on) and this is compatible with the sky system, as are some of the phone services from competing companies like ntl etc. Obviously one can't make a call if it's directly hooked up but if you split the signal then it should be fine. AFAIK sky will dial the box the odd time to check it's still there and not in somebody elses place which people have done in the past.

Well that's definitely an interesting option to to consider. I'm going to have to get broadband because I'm a programmer and I'm on call some weeks so that might be a great idea. Cheers sweetie :P

You are lucky you can get Digiweb I am 5 feet too low and blocked by trees
Sky's contract requires you to have a working telephone line so Rupert Murdoch Monopoly Corporation may spy on you and see what tv programes you watch when this in conjunction with Market Research companies like Nielsen Netratings allows them extract the max advertising revenue.

You need it to automatically order their very expensive Porn Movies too:)

Its all about the money folks.

Sky charge you €60:00 euro a month penalty rate if your box is not connected apparently

The phone line for SKY Multiroom is to make sure both boxes are at the same address.
