Well the hype has well and truly died down now and after most critic loving this game i went out and got it on release date. now i did love it and thought it was insane. But after a few months I've begun to see that this game is only a shadow of it predecessors. The fun that you would have running through the streets of Vice city after months of playing was still there but this game is well and truly lacking that. Imo its is actually just boring now. maybe GTA has become to realistic for its own good?

I got in on release day and played it for a few weeks then just left it and moved on to other games, only now have I started to play it again and get through the story before the DLC comes out.

I think part of the problem is it has become too realistic, now I like realism in my games but GTA just has too much of it, but I wouldn't want it stupidly arcadey either.

I just dont feel that close to the world as I did in Vice City, where you could have a Business on the side making money for you and a garage where you could store your cars instead of parking them on the street where the AI drivers crash into them.

Also there are far too much police patroling the streets. Lately have have less than a 50/50 chance of robbing a car without getting a wanted level, even if i check araound first as soon as I start a cop spawns. I even got a wanted level for trying to blow up a bank van by constantly ramming it into a wall. I did it in the docks so there would be no police around. Then I get a wanted level for no reason while Im in the process of doing it.

Its hard to have even a bit of fun in this game with the cops all over you, compared to other GTA where you could wreck a street before they went after you. This GTA though is not as good by a long shot, to me it feels like GTA 3 with better graphics as you are so limited in what you can do.

Vice City and SA gave the played far more freedom and then the radio, the radio was a massive let down in this GTA. I have always been a fan of the series since the very first game and 4 is the first to let the standaed slide, I think the series has had its peak in Vice City and is now on the way down.

I do think GTA4 is a very good game just not the best thing ever that all the critics say, its like they are afraid to say anything bad about the game. It's not 9/10 game at all, more like 7.5/10 it was hyped like Halo 3, that was just another average shooter no where near a 9/10, now CoD 4 on the other hand was an epic FPS game.

I'm still enjoying the multiplayer co-op... well kinda... I'm about 2 million from level 10, so it has become a bit of a grind.

I'll be interested in seeing what the DLC brings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 976 ✭✭✭overexcitedaj

any info on what the DLC is btw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

I haven't completed the game. It was/is compelling, and the world is amazing, but other games have come and gone and be far more immersive, which is a strange thing to say. I also have yet to enjoy any aspect of the MP.

    What Captain Chaos said.

I find online to be very dull. Its a bunch of kiddies going around constantly killing each other. Not very fun at all (i only really play online free-roam).

When SA came out, i said to myself "this is the best game i ever played". when IV came out, i said to myself; "San Andreas is still the best game i ever played".

Its good. But not great. and never will be. I agree with the 7.5/10 rating. 10/10 as some websites gave it, is just too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭Asmodean

Yeah I'd have to agree. Nowhere near a 10/10 once the hype grinds to a halt. Got it on release too and although it was very good it just didn't draw me in that much. I mean after playing vice city/San Andreas I knew my way around like I was living there. GTA4 never drew me in as much, up to the point that I always need to consult the map and just don't have a general care for the city. The cops do definitely spoil the fun as it places a lot of restriction on the laugh you can have. I think the transition to next gen was a bit of a stumbling block as they made the game too shiny and realistic to show off the new hardware. I'm hoping the next in the series will return once more to its fun loving roots.

I played it. I finished it. I got the two endings. I went for 100%. I left myself with half the pigeons and stunts to do. But I haven't played it in about 5 months now. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think I'll bother with it again. At least not in the foreseeable future.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a great game, with a great storyline, but for some reason the replay value doesn't seem to be in it this time round.

Completed it a few days ago and like the others have said it doesn't have the replay value or the humour that other GTA games had.

It will go down as the most overhyped game of all time IMO

that still belongs to Halo! everyone agrees this is an excellent game and i believe that too. i just think everyone is a little bummed about the realtistic change in direction. the only things realism improved was the driving and the shooting of a rpg! things i miss is the humour and the variety of missions(in 4, it was just kill, kill, kill).and of course, the blood, the chainsaw, the katana, the rampages, the knucklebuster, the little things that we dont need but are still fun.

one thing i definitely thought would happen but didnt was bumping into an old character or two. where was CJ, he said he was in LC before, why not again?
where was the guy in LCS? that mute guy from GTA3 could have shown up with another new woman for a race just like in SA.

im not saying these ideas are original but it would have given us a healthy detour from more of the same?

And still I wait for the PC version. For them to increase the graphic quality, and make the game harder.

By the time GTA rolls out in November, I should have a machine up and running. Hoping it'll be difficult.

    Claude's dead, baby. Claude's dead :p

One thing GTA IV has given me is the desire to replay SA again.

I'm not sure if he actually is, but I think I read it somewhere...

Claude Speed definitely dies in one of the GTA2 videos, but whether it's the same Claude is speculation. Also, there's graffiti around GTA IV Liberty City saying Tommy/Victor/Claude are dead. GameSpot forum comes up on Google for this one.

Ya I feel gta 4 definately wasnt as good as san andreas but maybe thats because it was the first gta game I played since the orginal one on the ps one hmmmm......i dunno

Well I've never played Halo so that explains why I came to that conclusion;)

I just found it funny how two of the largest Gaming sites and other media outlets gave it 10/10 ratings and yet some of the GTA diehards are starting to realise how overblown this game was.

But you are right about the absence of any old characters something I should have included in my initial post. Salvatore, Claude or CJ would have been much more effective then listening to Little Jacob speak and not have a clue what he was saying such was the thickness of hid accent

You mean the two sites which gives every game, including Halo, at least 8 out of 10?

Thats the one;). People will always still buy into that generated hype though regardless of the constant score

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

I played through it twice completing both endings. there was a lot i liked about the game. the realism didnt put me off. i thought it was more enjoyable that way. i really liked the gunfights you could get into.

but the game just felt a bit hollow. it lacked the replay value of the previous games. things like starting and developing businessess of buying properties would have been welcome.

also the friends thing needs to be dropped for the next game. its annoying having people ring you asking to go out.

overall though i think it was a good game but could have been better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I only had the game for about 2 weeks on the PS3. I played it fairly solid for the first week (but didn't play it anywhere near as much as SA and VC they where just addictive) once I'd finished the storeys I lost interest there just didn't seem to be anything to do.

It looked great though and the driving was really good but on foot it's like trying to control a retard using those controllers. Maybe it'll be better on PC?

I dont think the realism was the problem i think it was the fact that once your done the story, youre done the game. In games like San Andreas you could go on for hours and hours acquiring all the extra businesses and taking over everyting from a quarry to winning street races (gta4s were terrible and way to long). I love the realism of 4 i just think that the developers thought they could get away with a lower quality game if they just made it shiny enough

not when you see said websites giving bioshock on the ps3 10/10. if that's worth 10/10 then GTA IV is worth 20/10 tbh.

anyways that's beside the point of the thread.

i got GTA IV on release, and cleared it within 3/4 weeks. it was a good game, little over hyped and somethings i loved from vice city were missing and thankfully somethings that were added for SA were also taken out which was a good move.

i think the one thing i was most disappointed with was you play this guy who takes no **** from anybody, yet he gets pushed over doing ****ty missions for complete pussies. i think the whole mission area needs a rethink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Halo has one of the best online experiences you can play. GTAIV was good but i agree there is little to do once you finish the plot. Earning money was pointless and they should have kept the businesses, buying buildings etc in. Great physics, plot and characters though and I liked the radio station. It wasn't as good as Vice City but far more enjoyable that San Andreas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I'll forgive GTA4 it's flaws being the first in a new series but if they make a mess of GTA4 Vice city then there'll be hell to pay. :D

Well personally i thought it was great! I mean sure San andreas is an unreal game but GTA4 definately matches it!

i think that is incredibley harsh, its a well made game with very good online functions. nobody here has denied its a great game and games like saints row 2 shows how hard it is to aspire to the quality of rockstars games. same happened on ps2, no one could match rockstar.

whats disappointing is the lack of fun because of the realism, rockstar thought it was a good idea to remove a lot of what made GTA like the rampages, crazy non sensical weapons, ambulence, taxi, mad missions that had nothing to do with the main story or guns(too much shooting in gta4), businesses, those mini game vans- need i go on?

Aye its not fun, the characters have **** all personality and theres feck all to do.
Once you get over the explosions and the nice addition of throwing grenades out the car its all downhill.

    Must try Saints Row.

gta4 is a very very good game but it is nothing NOTHING compared to the old ones can u remember how the storyline in san andreas made u feel or the fun of runing around vice city i mean the amount of stuff san andreas had in it it had around 150 cars 100 main story line missions tuns of side missiond and gang turff. Ucould fly a fighter jet for **** sake

do u not see wat rockstar are doing thay are bring gta onto the next gen the next gta will have all the good stuff of the old ones and gta will be not very very good but great again dont worry

and i tryed saints row it ok but not as good SA or VC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭Rockee

I still go back to GTA4 every now and again. Mainly to go back to a gunshop, stock up and have fun taking cover somewhere and causing chaos all around. Nothing like a good grenade throw that takes out 2 cop cars, followed by taking out a S.W.A.T van via AK-47! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

Good game but I'd have liked to have seen the following:

    Tattoo parlors
    Barbers
More gang members on the streets

    I did like:
    the Irish mob
    the LCHC station (Murhpy's Law!)

While I wouldnt say IV is not fun , I do think its lost far to much in the trade off for uber graphics. The main story character has bugger all personality When compaired to CJ and Tommy Vercetti and this is my biggest issue with the new game. Nico sucks balls as a main character and looks like crap to be the players avatar imho. GTA Vice City and SA had oddles of charm even tho you played total scumbags, IV had some wannabe polish thugs who have as much charm as a microwaved goldfish.

The lack of sub games like cop missions, collecting wall tags, side misisons, barber shop/tatoo parlor/gym, car, boat and plane schools and skill ups really kill any replay value in IV. Now the addictions of the TV channels and mobile phones are damm impressive but its a pity they replaced the cool stuff that SA added tho the forumla.

I quite liked it at first - especially the bank job mission - but after playing it for a few weeks I got totally sick of looking after my "relationships" with all the characters mates so I could call for them in times of need.. and that's pretty much it. It's boring - they removed too much of the fun aspects. I found the auld "gardai" in the game a lot easier to evade than the satanic police forces of the previous installments.

How is a game overhyped when it received as many high reviewer/user scores that this game did? Yes the hype was massive but it definitely lived up to it. Theres not many things in this day and age that can live up to the hype but GTAIV did it in style. Even after this many months I still go back to my 360 to fire it up every now and again. The multiplayer is insanely fun and the single player still has its moments.

I recently got it for the PC and the game has just got better and better between increased graphic quality and the replay video editor its adds a lot more fun to the existing game. Plus its not going to be long before people start modding in which always sparks new interest in old games.

    Overhyped? Not a chance.

I remember when i used to sit there enterained to hell playing alex the kid on my sega master system....heh heh heh

I remember when i was 13 playing gta. i pacificly remember running over harry christianers :D and just shotting bullet that looked like full stops....

GtaIV is stunning its an amazzing game which show's where there really going to and what there plan's are. where they can take this game, granted things like garrages holding on to sweet cars etc where good, on the other hand keeping friend sweet can be a pain in the and the gf stuff etc is pretty anoying..

i think there experementing with us seeing what th eplayer wants and not want's ewach game is going to be hugly different and the ideas from vice city about buying buisness's etc its brillaint the costeming of the charicters is great from san andreas, the graphics, and genrall style of gtIV is cool so what il say is this its a great game with some really cool ideas....

but serously the 360 and ps3 havae so much potentiol that right now these guys can't make a cleer dession about where to concintrate on the games over all

its a bit long but me likes it a lot and i think the games going to go places over the next few months

I'm off work for the next 5 days. Since Saturday, just got back to playing GTA Vice City. The game is a work of art, just a pleasure to play though it took my a while to get to get used to the driving the cars. Everything is a lot more responsive and overly sharp. But still a wonderful game. Love listening to the soundtrack, some mighty songs and suberb acting.

The storyline is gammie.Niko is such a ........ I dont like him,nor do i like his cousin roman. The only character i like is Jacob. But the storyline is sooo poor every mission is a repeat of the one previous to it,just like in gta 3.And also the mafia(s) yet again are the dominant employers like in GTA 3.I enjoyed the diversity in SA.Instead of just 1 big city there were a number of DIFFERNT cities and a niice little countryside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭Phototoxin

Ghey-Lo is the most over hyped game. Its just another FPS with decent music but slow movement and mickysoft marketing!

GTAIV - I'm enjoying it. Seemed a bit dark but I adjusted my screen to be brighter and it was fine. I don't mind niko though... seems more realistic but very conflicting. Sort of 'I don't like being a criminal but hey I have no problem stabbing you for your car' which is strange. Its ok so far. And I like jacob the reefer head. He's funny I hope he doesnt die.

It has some of the best bits from SA (clothing) with none of the rubbish ( having to train/workout/practise guns) though the radio while diverse is not as good as it could be. I hope if they remake VC that its better than VC. I liked VC more.. maybe the music maybe the 70/80s I dunno..

  • Site Banned Posts: 26,456 ✭✭✭✭Nuri Sahin

I believe the game was meant to be a little darker as to empthasis the darkness of some of the characters and of course Liberty City. Niko's life is very dark and he has tunnel vision unlikeprevious GTA main characters, though I guess Cluade from GTA III is in similar sitaution to Niko.

The exact opposite was done for Vice City. Beautiful, bright, colours etc etc. but deep down there was a hidden world as such.

Definitely one of the best games I've ever played, I got it back in April and I'm still playing it. I completed it, left it for a month or so, then came back and replyed it. The random character missions are great, the stevie + Brucie missions are always fun, so too are the Police missions and most wanted. Niko is a great character, brilliant game, lived up to the hype.

I always got fed up with the working out, eating, ect. in SA, found it annoying. I rather the fact that you have friends in GTA4, you can get bonuses from them too, like backup from Dwayne, weapons from Jacob, bombs from Packie, etc. I don;t liek the police system though, sure it's easy to lose them, but its too easy to attract police, especially when getting the pigeons.

Haven't play it in roughly 3 monthes. But in hindsight, I only dislike the police system, as I was rather blinded by the fact it wasn't like SA or VC in style.
