Reading your post brought back memorys of childhood and getting something you didnt want, dispite asking, it felt really crushing because you couldnt get what you wanted yourself as a kid.

I havent felt the same about gifts since, now that I have disposable income I just buy whatever I really want (well apart from that porche...)`. So any gift I recieve is just a nice surprise and a bonus, if I get something nice well and good, if I dont, its about the gesture really.

I would ask myself some questions in your position, firstly is that important that you got the gift you wanted ? (try to forget about the fact you owed him or whatever, its probably muddling the whole thing in your head). Then decide in the future is it just worth hinting/ saying straight out what you`d like ? or is the worth the risk of something crappy for the suprise. I think the best thing to do is leave it this time around, be grateful, then for the next time when your shopping point out something you`d love, do it a few times and anybody would get the hint.
