Haven't a notion, it was never mentioned.

I'm going to UCC in September to do a masters, and their forum in boards is so dead. I'm gonna miss the UL one, but will probably still lurk :-P

I think I know you IRL.

Have handed in the form for my Link In module and have paid the fee. Do I have to get the lecturer to add me to SULIS or is this done automatically?

  • Registered Users Posts: 235 ✭✭CliCliW

I'd say the lecturer will need to add you to be honest. It should be quick and painless, just go up after class and ask to be added to sulis :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 963 ✭✭✭Pete123456

When I linked in I had to organise all of that. No timetable will be generated etc. You have to let the lecturers know you're linking in. Particularly so if you need to be assigned a group for a tutorial or lab.

  • Registered Users Posts: 228 ✭✭TMJM96

Does anyone know when the issue with the timetable will be sorted? It's only showing labs and tutorials at the moment. It's not too much of an issue because I have a screenshot of mine but at the same time my class' has been changed and now we can't see our updated one.

Website says "Student personalised timetables have been disabled for Week 2 while first year students are being assigned to lab and tut groups.
First year personalised timetables will be available by close of business on Friday next 16th September 2016."

Which is a bit stupid, surely they could sort out the labs and tutorial groups without taking everyone else's offline?

Your first mistake was assuming anything done by SAA/ITD has to make sense.

So it's even worse this year?
    We need a new ITD.

Anyone any experience selling books using the SU? Would I be better off just trying to do it myself on the freshers page or the likes?

    We need a new ITD.

About half an hour after I posted my message the timetable webpage came up with the message.

The ITD have been such a pain this year tbh. SULIS has been nothing short of a disaster for me this year, it's annoying.

Anyway, I downloaded an app called UL Today and it has the timetable for everything so I've just been using that

SAA are useless. I'm repeating 2nd year after I dropped out last year. Took them until yesterday to re-activate my email, portal and sulis accounts so I had no way of registering modules. Then when I went in today to get them registered, she registered me for all my 3rd year modules. So technically I'm in 3rd year now despite not doing 2nd year exams.

Unfortunately you'll not have grades for the year, otherwise ... :D

Anyone else see the redesign of entries into courses? Especially in Science! You can no longer go straight into Applied Physics or Maths & Physics and now must do General Physics for your first semester. Same thing happened for CSIS and Chemical departments.

It's a good idea tbh but I think they'll have a sudden rise in points.

This was discussed at student council last year; science and engineering are moving towards are more 'Americanised' system where you do general science or engineering and electives, and then in second semester you specialise.

That makes more sense really. They also got rid of the Energy course because of how small the intake was every year.

Yeah expecting the points to go way up, thought the intentions was to get rid of the stress students are put under because of the points race?

It's a nice idea that takes pressure off deciding which course you want though...I mean I'm doing Maths & Physics but I'd equally enjoy a degree focused more on computers instead which I'll probably have to just learn on the side for a masters then after (I did put Mathematical Sciences as 1st choice but got a C1 instead of a B3 in maths). That's my game plan, at least next year things will be more generalised.

Well at the moment you're doing CE4701, right? It's basic programming but the skills you learn from it are invaluable. A lot of people (including myself) in Physics have taught ourselves the basics of other languages. You'll also be doing some programming in your labs with the Arduino for PH4051 too.

I think the idea is good and it definitely takes the "decide what you want to do for your whole future rIGHT NOW" element of the CAO, but I also imagine there'll be a significant hike in points - something that the university will definitely see as a bonus from a 'business' perspective.

They'll hike the points up anyway, this just gives them a nice excuse.

Definitely have to agree with the idea of having a general approach for first years. I wonder if they'll do this to more departments?

This is only from my experience but I always thought it was a bit stupid that first year physics students had totally different options, which they picked themselves based only off LC Physics, which isn't taught correctly and doesn't test your real aptitude for the subject. Allowing students to have a go at both and seeing what they actually preferred is a good idea. I'm just interested at what maths modules General Physics will do. AFAIK Linear Algebra and Calculus (that M&P do) would be more useful than the Engineering Maths I do.

Points will rise but I'm not sure by how much. I can't see the points for General Physics being higher than about 450/460 but again it depends how many places are made available and how the course is marketed.

One thing that shocked me was the Maths requirement, a H4 which I think is in the C1 bracket from the old LC grading system. Which is definitely much higher than the D3 required for AP. This again will make the points rise.

    Sorry for that rant...

Yeah, the C1 is a bit odd, even Maths and Physics was a C3 in the old system. Maybe the H4 suggests it will be Linear Algebra and Calculus modules?

Looks like Arts has turned in to a joint course with Mary I too. Wonder how that'll work

It's odd. I was very poor at LC Maths but I did okay in my Maths modules and my Maths level hasn't ruined my other modules so I'll see how it works out.

Has anyone here swapped their co-op and Erasmus semesters around? I want to do it but I don't want to run in to a load of difficulties either.
