Our computing lectures are like that. Today was torture! It was a struggle to stay awake. I counted 3 people asleep and everywhere you looked around all you could see was people yawning and rubbing their eyes! Absolute slow, painful, torture.

Academic Literacy. Bane of my life at the moment

Lecturers who tell you to start getting organised and filing your notes when we haven't gotten any yet.
Lecturers who tell you to be on top of your deadlines before we've even gotten the assignments which thus causes me to get paniky.

    German History lectures.
If you want a slow, monotonous, mind-numbingly dull way to die, I found it

Haha my housemate came home rants about academic lit today. It sounds fair crap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭snazzy

    Oh it's BEYOND crap.
I am going to have more to do in that than the assignments due in for politics. Two hour lab in it tomorrow.
    AAAAAAARRGGGHHHH

It really is like all the LC crap about how to study and what's the best way to study and last weeks lecture was all about what kind of learner are you and yer man went on for 50 mintues about basically, how you may be like the majority of people in learning or you may be like the minority of learners who learn in a different way.
Wothout telling you what the two kinds are, how you can tell which one you are, whether its good or bad or what you can do about it.
    **** SAKE.

    *cough*
    Sorry.

Oh I counted 5 people asleep today. In my row alone.
And I hate DG016. Badly badly lit.

    Bitch: Printers in the library.
So fecking confusing and slow and then my account always seems to be gone before I get a chance to do anything!

Trust me snazzy, it won't be anywhere near 2 hours long, especially if it is the first one. We were told today that 2 hours is the time allotted and rarely will all of it be needed. I got up at 8am to go to a computing lab, spent 15 mins in it and was told to go, your finished! 15 mins of punching 2+3 into a computer:mad::mad: at 9am!

Ya that's a crap lecture theatre, old Jean Monet. Hardly any of the little desk thingys are still intact. Really annoying.

That Academic Literacy module makes me want to claw my face off

Learning how to learn and studying how to study and reading how to read etc.......

So what do you actually do in the computer lab?

And ya, I have all my lectures in either Jean Monet or the Foundation building and Jean Monet is definitely fairly crappy in comparison but I suppose it's great in terms of hiding in the back and looking like you know what's going on.

They have a module where you learn to study?

    /facepalm

So how do you study a module about studying? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭snazzy

Well here I am in my lab for AL at the mo and we just had to write a 250 word piece on how I will use new skills to learn.
This is for our LEARNING JOURNAL.

We also have to do an oral presentation and a group essay.
I know they mean this to help us but it's hours of my life I could put to better use. I'd say something if they were showing us how to use referencing, use the library, write an essay but noooo, it's all about how YOU learn. Basic secondary level stuff.
All first year humanities students have to do this apparently.

    arggghhh

That sounds painful, that must be a new module. It wasn't there in 2005 anyway! I can't even remember being taught how to use the library or write essays, a group of us kinda figured it out ourselves. Considering my academic performance, we didn't really figure it out very well...:(

My timetable told me I had AL Lab today in S119 from 5-6. Arrived at ten to five....stayed till five past, there was an AL class in there, they did not leave, looked like they were dying a slow death. Ran while I still could.

Do you think we'd fail the module if we just kept b*tching about it in our essays? Is there anyone we can hold responcible for this? Someone's head must roll.

I actually thought they were gonna help us with research and planning essays and writing essays - that's what people need most help in...IMHO. Clearly I can't moan about this enough.

My money is also slowly running out - uh oh! Why does no one in Limerick want to do Japanese for the LC?

    Life's still good. :D

Will people PLEASE stop standing around in front of the lady's toilets in the Foundation building?!

After a 50 minute lecture and about a gallon of tea and Riverrock swishing around my bladder, I really can't afford to go through a human maze to get to the bog

Nopes. Did discussion for about an hour then she gave us half an hour to do that learning journal which takes all of 10 minutes to type. Then she let us go.

academic literacies. No one should have to endure this subject....it's painful. I think my soul died a little last monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭snazzy

Now don't forget to keep up to date with your learning journal!

    See you there tomorrow :eek::(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭pervertedcoffee

Lads when were the Learner Diaries discussed ??? I haven't a clue whats going on. I reckon we should all sign a petition saying how much we hate this class!! They'll never make the same mistake again....>> They can't penalise you if you don't turn up for lectures right? I have half a mind just to go to the AL tutorials and skip lectures

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

it was suggested we create a learner journal on Sulis, however the blogging system on it is complete crap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭Arcade Panda

learning journal?what is this you speak of??! I'm so behind it's ridiculous! anybody here in sociology? we have to have our essays chosen by tommorow for tutorials...****ed! on top of that i'm pretty sure I have swine flu!!

In Academic Literacies you have to do a learning journal after the computer lab stating what you learned and how you are going to use it to aid in your 3rd level education.
And I do sociology and do you mean you have to chose what article you have read? Because if we have to choose our essays already...****.

Damn, just checked Sulis and we have a alot more to do than I thought we did, but picking the essay title doesn't seem too bad. I'm leaning towards "Identify a group of which you are or have been a part of and make an argument for it's classification as a subculture."

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭TheSpecialOne

Sociology eh!?the one with amanda?!...WE HAVE AN ESSAY!for when?....btw academic l can go away and take a **** not going ever again....ive heard it last 6 years!!:mad:

The tutorial assignment is a pain in the hole. have most of it done apart from the part you have to access on campus in the library.

am hinting towards the subculture essay meself.

I actually love sociology...I think out of all our lectures shes definately the most helpful what with all the stuff she leaves us on SULIS....don't get me started on Padraig Lenihan....why won't he put the history notes on SULIS??? Not fair:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

Politics are fairly good with the sulis stuff. but it can be a case of information overload sometimes with sociology.

Not so sure we can mention the lecturer's actual name here, but I do share your feelings. Bloomin' annoying

Some academics get very bad if things are easier for their student than for them when they were in college...I don't see why UL doesn't do like UCC TCD(afaik) and just podcast all their lectures - in fact Berkley make a lot of their lectures availalble to the public (History 5 is very useful to my fellow history student, fyi)

Whats this about sociology essays? I've heard nothing???
What do we have to do for the tutorial this week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

Your tutorial assignment for this week is on SULIS. It is about citation.

    SO4001 SEM1 > Resources > Tutorial assignments.

Don't ask me about the tutorial assignment for week five as it looks rather nasty and way over my head.

Your first sociology essay is due on October 28. The details of which are also availible on SULIS under Resources > Mid Term Paper.

I would concur with this. Some modules put their stuff on SULIS, others put them on servers only accessible on campus. If only they would all put their stuff in the one place.

No no not allow name and shame.
    Time of tutorial?

Cos' I'm not too fond of mine at the moment either. Massive headache. He dived right in! Totally lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,116 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

What is it with these stupid tutorials where we do nothing but stupid "projects" rather than actually learn anything?! The reason we go to tutorials is to get extra help with the heavy theory from the lectures

It really is a waste of time
