Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That does my head it. I'm reliant on my assigned PC for the FYP. I'm normally in the lab at 9am ish and I may need to go for my teaching lab or a lecture during the day for up to 3 hours, but I have come back to my PC being switched off, despite there being loads of other machines. You can argue that I'm leaving the machine, but it's a 4th year lab, and the machine is assigned to me for FYP purposes until May!

The switching off of the PC would be a problem as I may have a number of windows open. If the PC was logged on with a different user, I could then go back to the PC when the other user is finish to log back on and continue as normal.

The fecker just looked into his laptop, with his headphones on, when he noticed I was abit peeved off. Arrr lol

Has the CoOp office burned down or do they just not bother with emails anymore...?

Ironically, I think it was burned down by students who got frustrated at the lack of replies to emails.

    Dearest Niamh,

I am writing to you with regard to your recent slew of emails.

While I'm sure that you are a lovely person, and your research is no doubt highly valuable to the human race, could I kindly request that we no longer receive a weekly invitation to partake? It's rather beginning to capture the urine.

    Writing up Coop Candidate Report...
List of about 12-15 questions, at this point it's about the length of an average assignment, just passed the 3k word mark, luckily nearly done...
Worst thing is, I'm not guaranteed placement out of this, but done as much as I can do..

Just to further on my complaint, get the day off last Monday to go in to office. Our CoOp officer not there but yer man at the reception goes "oh yeah, I'll make a note of it and she'll ring ya on Wednesday when she's back". It's now Saturday and no call...
    Wouldn't mind but it's kinda important :/

Had a telephone interview on Monday and the interviewer forwarded on a questionnaire sheet afterwards for me to fill in, didn't expect it to take too long, totted up at about 3300 words...
I'd say it's unique to my situation though, not a mandatory coop thing, still trying to get placement.

Had two interviews, one in person, the other telephone. First one 10 applied for the placement so I have near no chance of getting it, plus I had a dismal interview, shot myself in the foot with lack of preparation.
Interview this Monday though only 2 had been shortlisted, myself and this other girl. Phone interview went okay, hoping to win it with that questionnaire thing. If I don't win it with questionnaire, I lost the race in the interview. Sickened if I don't get it to be honest, know nothing about the girl to be fair but makes you think if you can't get placement when there's only two of you, what hope have you got... :/ :P

    Hi guys,

I just have a quick question.

I just pid a registration fees for my masters by online bank transfer. But something tells me I have done it the wrong way. I didn't receive any giro form. All I received wasn acceotance letter stating what way I paid and proof of payment.

So how would the UNI know that 250 came from my Bank Account ?

Did you put in any narrative or a reference number that came by the letter instructing payment

Best thing is to pop into the PG office tomorrow to clarify

I referenced the payment but its not a unique reference such as one's student ID.

Though I took a snapshot of the transaction reference. Unfortunately I miles away from limerick but I'll give them a call to see where I'll stand.

The cycle lanes around UL campus are not safe or fit for purpose. It is much safer, faster and easier to cycle on the road. I would advise all people cycling around UL not to use them. I have talked to the safety officers in UL at length about these issues and they can understand my point of view, but are not necessarily in full agreement!!

Oh they're definitely not good cycle lanes, very poorly laid out, but I would have thought that it'd be safer for cyclists to use the one from the east gate as far as the Stables rather than along the road at that narrow part past the arena with the speedbumps? The guy was also free-wheeling along, away in his own world. Seemed completely unaware of cars around him.

The east gate cycle lane is the worst, crosses the entrance to the east-gate car park, the maintenance yard and the staff car park across from MSSI. No car turning left into these car parks is looking out for a cyclist on his way into college. I am convinced a bad accident will happen at these spots some day. I've seen a few close calls before.

All in all he's better off on the road, and the 10 seconds extra it took you to get the car park......... Is it really something to get irritated over?

I would have thought that a cycle lane would be that better option than using the road? Drivers still have to be on the lookout for pedestrians when they're coming out of/ into those entrances and if they don't look properly, would it not be more the fault of the drivers as opposed to the lanes themselves?

As a cyclist I would rather keep my life in my own hands instead of placing it into the lap of gods counting on a driver to see me from the corner of their eye. Pedestrians stop and cross if its safe, this is impractical if on a bike. On the road I am completely visible and much safer.

But you're not really... I mean a driver coming around one of the corners isn't going to be expecting a cyclist on the road when there's a cycle path...

Considering the speed limit, speed bumps, pedestrian crossings and the fact that cyclists aren't been killed every day in huge numbers around the countries roads, I'm pretty confident the road through UL could be considered safe!!

Then the same logic also means that the cycle lane is safe to use. Also UL isn't full of pedestrians get knocked down at. Also want to point out that the crossing at the arena carpark, mantaince and MSSI car park the pedestrians and cyclists don't have right of way and must yield for traffic. If you are worried about being run over at these spot maybe you should pay better attention and abide by the rules instead of complaining.

This is exactly why the cycle lanes are impractical and as a consequence unsafe.

    Therefore I use the road.

I really don't get you here. It's unsafe because you may have to stop? Stopping at an entrance when there is a car coming is unsafe?
Are you insured on the road where cycle lanes exist, given that you're obliged to use them?

So they're unsafe because you just wont stop and look to see if anything is coming?

Footpaths are unsafe because pedestrians have to stop and look before crossing the road.. therefore people should walk on the road.. by your logic..

Why would I cycle along a path that forces me to slow down and stop every 200m. I can instead use the road along which I have right of way ahead of any car at the junction. The reason I cycle is because it is faster than walking and at peak times faster than driving. It is totally impractical for me to have to stop at all these junctions so just use the road. Its easier and safer.

    As a side note,
    1. A cyclist has no insurance, irrespective of bike lanes.
    2. Under the road traffic act a cyclist isn't required to use a bike lane

Yet cycling is still faster. I still don't understand how it's safer when a) cars aren't expecting a cyclist on the road when there is a cycle path provided and b) if you stop when you're supposed to, there's no reason to fear being hit.
Yes, you have to use cycle lanes:
So really, the only reason you don't use cycle lanes is because you don't want to stop when you're meant to...

Cycling insurance is optional. I have it as a member of Cycling Ireland.

What's that well known message again? Oh yeah, "Expect the unexpected". You shouldn't be driving faster than the speed you'd be capable of stopping safely in.

No, use of cycle lanes is not law. That first website appears to be wildly out of date.

    EDIT: see here: http://www.businesspost.ie/#!story/Home/News/Varadkar+abolishes+requirement+for+cyclists+to+use+cycle+lanes/id/19410615-5218-5085-7ae6-7b87b0401760

If you want to get technical, a cyclist is only obliged to use a cycle track. A cycle track cannot be occupied by pedestrians. This is not what is provided in UL. Instead it is a cycle path, which is optional.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1998/en/si/0274.html

Cars don't need to expect a cyclist on the road. Driving with due care and attention will suffice!!!
