Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Gardai SOCO/Forensic officers

I've studied a degree in Forensic Science in Wales & done some criminology along with in my first 2 years.

I cannot join the Gardai themselves as I have a disability however civillian stuff should be ok as far as I am aware. Anyway it is the scientific side that I am interested in.

What I would like to know is that are the Technical Bureau Gardai? As in officers etc or are they civillian supporting staff. Eg the Photographers are civillian but I find the official site wanting in that department as well as the fact that some of the java links at the top have *never* worked for me. I get mixed reports from some people - some say yes some say no and its getting vexing. So I thought I'd ask here.

Additionally how does one apply for the more scientific/technichal positions or where are they advertised? I rarely hear of one. Could someone point me in the right direction. It would be nice to get a job in it in Ireland if possible but I feel that my career options are quite limited in this country :(

There are no civillian Scenes of Crime staff or members of the Garda Technical Bureau, but there are civillian staff in the Forensic Science Lab in the Phoenix Park. They'd advertise on publicjobs.ie. They were looking for people earlier in the year, so I'm not sure if they'd be recruiting again soon.

Your best bet would be to register with publicjobs.ie & set up your account so you'll automatically be contacted when the next competition is being held.

I did a degree in crime scene science in the UK too and there are plenty of civilian positions available there but the gardai are yet to catch up in the sense they will only hire members of the gardai for specialist positions including the technical bureau. In fairness there has been some talk about opening up these specialist positions to civilians and other jobs like garda station receptionist or other office duties. To date there has been no change so your only choice is to go through the normal garda recruitment which is 2 years training and 3 years probation before you can apply.

If your degree is more lab based, id recommed heading for the forensic science lab via public jobs website or even look about the FSS in northern ireland. Competition is high for these jobs due to the "supposed" glory involved.
