I purchased my garmin 250w in January of 2008 and never registered it, I registered it last night on the garmin site and it said I am entitled to the 2009 maps for free so I downloaded the 3Gb download over night.
I have a 2GB sd card for my unit so I just need to check the loading procedure, I know I launch the package and it extracts to my pc first but from reading online I came across a few places that said to put the update on my sd card.
Can anyone help me on the proper procedure?
Do I put the sd into my laptop reader or into the garmin and then do the install?

It won't install to the SD card, it will only put the updated maps on to the unit internal memory. I've been through this process with a friend's Nuvi 250, it said that there wasn't enough memory to store all of Europe so I aborted the update and inserted a blank 2GB SD card and started again, it completely ignored the SD card and I got the same message about insufficient internal memory.

If I've already registered but not tampered with my start date is there anyway I can get the free update - feck paying €80 for it
I doubt it, your problem is that Garmin know the serial number of your unit so there's no point in frigging the date on the unit, they will use the date you registered the unit as the start date so you won't qualify for a free upgrade.

What did you do in the end or did you get it updated?

I asked my friend if she wanted to stay with all of Europe 2008 maps or upgrade to 2009 but have only UK and Ireland, she opted for the upgrade but obviously lost all of Europe except for this region.

I got an email off garmin about paying around €100 for a lifetime update.
Anyone know much about this ?

I have tried downloading the update 3 times, it says successful each time but when i try and extract it it stays at 0% and even after waiting 3 hours it does not move passed 0%, I taught maybe it was my laptop so I did a download onto my pc using my home internet and it was still the same.

Anyone want to post me a dvd with the 2009 europe update that has been downloaded as I am told i cannot use a garmin update dvd since I have an unlock code for a downloaded update?
I will pay for the postage and the dvd via paypal if needed.

Download the Light version of the Free Download Manager and use it download it . I could not get it to work when I used Garmin's own downloader. It worked first time after I downloaded it with the Light version of the Free Download Manager.

Have set it downloading with that lite download manager now.

Download perfect with lite manager so thanks strongman.

@coylemj - I got the message that my unit could not take all maps even with my sd in it so there was an option for Ire & uk or another option lower down that had alot of europe on it so I picked it and got uk, Ire, france, spain, portugal and germany onto the unit.

Thanks for that, makes the upgrade a bit less painful.

Installed 2009.1 maps EU maps and software 5.0 on my Nuvi 255 there today; I'm dissapointed at how out of date whats meant to be a December 2008 map drop is. Theres a housing estate built 2006/7 behind me not on it; the N4 and N7 M50 junctions are still in as roundabouts, and I've found a few other problems (roundabouts converted to traffic lights and vice versa)... as well as almost all 2008's big road openings (ORR Phase 3 in Dublin for one) missing.

I've a feeling it was a waste of 3.35GB, although thankfully it was free...

edit: and yes, I've just gone and reported a stack of those errors to Navteq before anyone jumps on me for not doing it.

    Hey back!

I don't know if anyone is still interested but...

I have a nuvi 200 that I bought and first used back in March this year (so well outside the 60 day thing). I hadn't registered with garmin as I had my crafty mind thinking about just this situation. No mapsource or any other garmin apps installed on the system.

    What I did was:
    * Hooked up the unit via usb cable. It was recognised as a mass storage device. I browsed to the xml file referenced to earlier and edited the ifix field (with notepad!), saved it and left the unit powered on and connected

    * Visited garmins website and registered with my serial number. I had to download a plugin so that it could detect the unit which I installed. It insisted on updating the firmware on the unit (up to version 5.0 I think). This caused a reboot so I had to re-edit the xml file (seemed to reset on reboot as others have said). I then went back to the garmin website and let it detect the unit. The website congratulated me on my new purchase and informed me I had a map update available. It gave me a serial to use and a link to launch a download for the update

    * After the 2.5gig download I reconnected my unit and did the ifix edit again, no idea if this was necessary but better safe than sorry. Ran the software, inputted the serial garmin had given - waited (a while) for the unit to update and then all was well and the 2009 maps were on

I know it was a one time trick but it's been worth it for me - I no longer live in the middle of a field with no connecting roads. Granted I'm still living in a field but now there is a road really close by!

Thanks to all the previous posters cause I never would have gotten this far without the info posted here

Hmmmm - Gonna try this out shortly on my "first fix" December 2007, but never registered Garmin Nuvi 760T

    - That's unless anyone has anyone any reason to believe that Garmin have stepped in to plug this loophole

    - A bit worried about all this talk of there not being enough free space etc. - currently have all of Europe in mine - not keen to lose it all and just go UK & Ireland??? Should I be ok with the 760T???

    Hi all
I have just updated my brand new sat nav and now it says there isn't enough space free. So know I have uk and ire but none of europe, can anyone tell me what I have done wrong? Or can I add a memory card to my sat nav? Why do they make an update that is bigger than the unit?

Have you installed the Garmin Mobile XT application to the phone? If you need any of the files etc. let me know & I'll upload them to rapidshare for you. I've set up dozens of Nokia smartphones with Garmin so feel free to ask me anything...
