Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi

my girlfriend is having a baby. As I am paying the medical bills can I claim tax relief on these?

Also with the budget changing the relief to 20% instead of at marginal rate,

A - Can I claim all charges (even those paid in 2009) under 2008 tax relief or must 2009 charges be claimed in the year they were paid?

B- Does the new tax relief only apply to charges incurred from 2009 onwards

    thanks

To claim relief you need to complete FORM MED 1. You should find it on the Revenue website at http://www.revenue.ie/forms/med1.pdf

If you read the notes on FORM MED 1 you will see the situation about who is entitled to claim. They seem to have widened the definition of who is entitled to claim relief.

You would need to contact Revenue to confirm that you can claim relief relief for your specific situation.

For expenses actually incurred in the year 2008 you should get relief at 41% if that is your higher tax rate. If you only pay tax at 20% that is the rate at which you will get relief.

You claim at the end of the calendar/tax year as you only know then what expenses you have incurred !

For expenses actually incurred in 2009 we are all on relief at the 20% rate !!

Best of luck with the baby......
