Well .. if not then I'll have more time to get up to date on full reviews...

and you can let me know how the beast feels .. post some sample pics .. sample HD video ... :)

Its all speculation, until it comes out no-one know what the availability will be like. Canon will want to get as many units out as possible before Christmas so they can get in on the Christmas rush. They probably have warehouses full of them right now.

If I can't get one by Christmas then I'll be getting a 50d or possibly a Nikon as all but one of my lenses are EF-S.

I think it's gonna be pushed even further back .. as the YEn exchange rate is not great and it seems Canon could lose a lot of money ...

Review of the 50D on DPREVIEW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭Rael

There's also a new firmware out for the 50D which is supposed to sort out the Err99 issues plaguing earlier models!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭jackdaw

It's not getting glowing reviews ... doesn't seem to be much better then the 40D ... certainly not €500 better...

think Canon f*cked up on this one ... or at least they should cut the price by about 20%...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

It depends on what way you look at it, but for price difference I def don't think it is, although been the Cam fanatic I am if I wasn't getting the 5D mk II I would've def have purchased the 50D to replace my 40D. :o

after many a long night of wailing and gnashing of teeth, the realisation that I am not and would never be a pro or even semipro photographer took hold and I decided that the 50D would be absolutely ample for my needs. That, plus the fact that I have a decent job and not on the dole and thus cannot afford the 5D :D...

so I took the plunge yesterday and went into Gunn's where I picked up the body and had a nice long chat with John - a really lovely man and thanked me profusely for buying off him, such a difference from the likes of Conns. He was so nice that I picked up a new bag which fits the 50D plus 17-40 (when it comes), a flash and a 50mm 1.4. Perfect for travelling light.

One thing though - Canon's DPP software is pretty atrocious - I almost shat myself when I viewed some images at 100% because they were horribly pixelated. Thanksfully when I converted to Tiffs and viewed in Lightroom they were fine. I'm assuming I had to upgrade to LR 2 to get 50D support???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

I know it's diff for the 50D but for the 40D I've just switched most of my PP back to Canons DPP software from Lightroom, I found the IQ is better.
It obviously lacks a few bells but for now it will do.

Congratz on the new camera Cambo. It's pretty obvious to me from your Flickr stream that your own skill will far outweigh any body so I wouldn't worry. Buying a lens in Gunns recently was probably my best ever consumer interaction in this country, great people.

For the way I am editing my photos it suits me better, it is basic but thats teh way I edit my photos, I don't do landscape like yours were LR prob would suit it better, gig photography DPP is well suited too, B+W anyway.
So I take it you used and hated DPP?

Lightroom and ACR might have more options, but what DPP does, it does it much better than any of them. Sharpening and noise reduction in particular are very good compared to the competition.

It's a shame the interface is so ****e, it puts most people off using it (including me, for a long time).

Good post, once you start using it on a regular basis its just as straight forward as Obama winning a US election. :)

Jackdaw if you have pre-ordered it then I would imagine yes, but if not NO, you've been told this numerous times in the thread including by me!!!

I currently have a 350D, I'm not happy with it and want to upgrade, was first thinking of a 40d but now reading reviews I'm being swayed towards the 50D... arrrgh

Ive been shooting alot of indoors stuff recently, and I want to get in to gig photography. I just don't want to get a camera that I might have to upgrade in a year or two.

Can someone offer any opinions.. 40D VS 50D?
Anyone know off hand how much Gunns have the 50d body only for?

    Cheers!

(i didnt want to start another 'what should i get thread)

    huge JPEGs ...

    Pentium 4 , 4GB RAM, should do it ?

Er your more than a bit premature, it took far more then a month for the 1st proper reviews of the 50D!

No need for a review .. this can't posibly be a DUD !!!

Cameralabs had a review up pretty quick around the time of release. Could be reviews within 2 weeks, maybe sooner

Well first, i wouldn't call that a decent pc - esp. by todays standards. Also getting a p4 in this age is 1) pointless 2) possibly more expensive than getting a low-end dual or even quad core intel.

and lmao. 4gb ram for dealing with a 60-120mb PS file.

I've 3gb on my laptop, it can handle 1gb PS files.
