Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Liverpool v Wigan 3pm.
    Live on Setanta Ireland.

    Torres & Babel definitely out.
    Heskey & Zaki are doubtful.

Last season finished 1-1, Torres with a lovely worked goal from Gerrard & Finnan.
The mighty Bramble got the equaliser with a super strike.
IIRC Kirkland had a busy night and pulled off some good saves.

My guess at how Liverpool will line out

    Reina

    Arbeloa----Carra
    Agger
    Aurelio

    Masch
    Alonso---

    Kuyt
    Gerrard
    Riera

    Keane

Seems to be a few heads from here goin' over, enjoy!!!
I'll be watchin with a few cans.

id agree with that team with the exception for masc who i think will be rested. Lucas may start.
i think we'll win this but it wont be easy(is it ever with us)

2-0 liverpool with Keane opening his PL accoun for us.

That formation is a no-brainer so it prolly won't happen! Didn't know Heskey had picked up a knock. Internationals have a greater attrition rate than nuclear war!

    Could also be something like

    Reina

    Arbeloa---Carra---Agger---Aurelio

    Benayoun--Gerrard--Alonso--Riera

    Kuyt--Keane

Don't know about that Mike. Actually.........................maybe.

I'd be delighted with a win here and will be pissed if it results in a draw or loss. No in between for me here. Let's just pray that nobody else picks up a knock. Damn internationals!

I think Zaki is a doubt too. Read it on the aertel page

Could very well be, read somewhere there Lucas & Masch only due in Liverpool today. Wouldn't be surprised if Sami started too.

I think Pennant might be useful on this one, to complement Reira.

    Reina
    Arb Agger Carra Aurelio
    Pennant Gerrard Alonso Reira
    Kuyt Keane

    Does anyone here play FantasyRafa?

I does I do. Most weeks.

Anyways the good news is this game is live on Santana Ireland from 2.30 :):) and is followed by Aldos Dream Team in which he considers his all time Liverpool starting 11.

No doubt he will include himself, Whelan and Houghton and then the 3 of them can bitch about how the club will never ever be as good as it was when they played for them.. :pac:

As for the game. Really hope that we continue our recent run of results and win this. Tis devastating that Torres is missing but we aren't in too bad a position these days.

seriously, if we win comfortably today and the RTE pundits tonight say that we're still crap going by the standards of our pool's heritage, ill go nuts! I'mm all for the crazy RTE antics, but this one just seems particularly nuts. By this measure every weekends 'premiership' should be the lads saying 'ah they're not as good as they once were', as nearly every team in the league bar United and Chelsea has seen better days (a few of the promoted sides notwithstanding).

I do think today will be tough though. They've a good solid well organised and willing team. A lot will come down to who takes to the field for both sides. If Zaki and Heskey are missing, that makes life much much easier for pool.

If Zaki and Heskey are missing it could turn into another Stoke, Wigan have nothing else up front. Henri Camara will start on his own, leaving Wigan no option but to play deep and flood midfield.

Gerrard has to start in a striking support role, although he has vowed to give up his "Roy of the Rover" ways, he is Liverpools only signaficant goal threat today.

I doubt this match will be high scoring, an odd goal or a draw is the most likely outcome, for the neutrals watching hopefully Wigan have their 2 main strikers fit, or it could turn into a long couple of hours.

Liverpool scored over 100 goals from all over the park last season. What have you got to quantify your assertion that Gerrard is Liverpool's "only" significant goal threat today..?

I'm going for a Liverpool win, without Gerrard scoring at all.

That Keane and Kuyt cannot score? ;)

Heh I like this headline. You can see the logic of it though. Michael Owen might take some solice from it, maybe.

Seems to be momentum building behind the story, and Rafa hardly gave a definitive answer when asked about it yesterday, just the usual "I prefer not to talk about players of other teams" instead of "Let me say this, we are not interested in Heskey at all", etc.

Heskey deffo out with dodgy back.

Great news Heskey is out from a tactical point of view.
    I think a 4-4-2 is likely-like against Utd.

I think Torres in the only one of our strikers who can play as a lone striker.

    Team in

    Reina
    Arbeloa, Carragher Agger, Dossena
    Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Riera
    Kuyt, Keane.

Subs: Cavalieri, Hyypia, Insua, Benayoun, Ngog, Lucas, El Zhar.

    Wigan

Kirkland, Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble, Figueroa, Valencia, Cattermole, Palacios, Kapo, De Ridder, Zaki.

Subs: Pollitt, Taylor, Kilbane, Koumas, Brown, Boyce, Camara.

    Mike

Pennant really has to pull his finger out today. If we do play 4-4-2 we can't afford wingers who drift in and out of the game.

www.Liverpoolfc.tv always announce the line up roughly an hour before kick off.

Strange line up. When was the last time Liverpool played with two proper wingers ? Very unusual!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

The team is announced about an hour before KO as a rule,

arg, 1 out with fantasy rafa, had Yossi instead of Pennant, though i actually prefer pennant being in there. More confident of winning now.

As Boggles said, with Wigan having nothing up front, they'll be very very defensive hoping Camara's pace can get something on the break, so playing with natural wingers makes sense from Liverpool, to stretch out Wigan's defence and hopefully create openings for Keane work some magic in.

I have a feeling that the pool will win but Zaki to score first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,100 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

didn't realise zaki was starting, thats more of a worry alright, should provide more space for pool to play in though, they need to play a bit higher up the pitch to get the best out of him.

    Wigan's team:
Kirkland, Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble, Figueroa, Valencia, Cattermole, Palacios, Kapo, De Ridder, Zaki

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,519 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I liked Keane and Kuyt up front against Utd. I am optimistic.

Sorry to hark on-but its such a massive chance for Pennant-I hope he follows McGeady and Duff's displays for Ireland and actually works off the ball.

happy enough with the team, had a feeling pennant would start. very important after chelseas result.

What kind of Bozo thought a short corner on the left of the Wigan goal would be a good idea when Pennant was the one receiving the ball?

Is Zaki playing on with a dislocated shoulder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,710 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

If only Kuyt had any pace! God how we miss Torres for breaks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭shotamoose

Agger not looking very with it so far, Gerrard keeps missing lots of passes. Riera's playing well though.

I wonder what we'd be like if Hyppia replaced Dossena with Agger moving out left. He seems more interested in going forward and has lost some of his defensive sense

    No it didn't why don't you just . . . off
liverpool haven't put in a decent corner since we beat juve in anfieal in 2005

and it stayed out because of a great save,

unlucky reira there should of got his first goal
