I heard some silly rumour that goes something along the lines of the above.
    True or false?

Dont know about that but since the end of March 2008, the Irish government has had the legal backed ability to monitor everything that is sent through Irish wavelines, broadband, dial-up, etc. In other words, every email, every download, every page you are or have viewed, has been recorded for record maybe to be used later against you!

when they change the laws to make you a criminal for what you did that falls under their catch all laws. Wonder how long till they ditch this freedom of speech nonsense that they like to preach.

The Irish gov has been known to be spying on all internet traffic since it started. Their intercetion program with the UK has already been highlighted in the ECHR and nothing was really done about it.

The Data retention act enables the authorities to hold information from every conceivable digital source for up to 5 years. All text messages made in Ireland over the last year would fit on the average size computer hard drive. All Westlink digital records are also retained and if necessary can be used against you for revenue and policing at the request of the authorities. (You can look up these records for your self on their own website :D )
