"Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, facing a tough reelection fight, urged GOP presidential contender John McCain on Friday to stop making automated calls into her state linking Democratic nominee Barack Obama to a 1960s radical."

"The calls say Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge’s home and killed Americans.”

Of course these calls fail to mention that Obama was 8 years old when Ayers was a violent war protester, or that their association was years later on a charity board with other notables of American society?

Do automated telephone messages succeed when attempting to character assassinate presidential candidates in America? If they do, what does this say about the American political system or the parties that do such things?

You know, call me naieve but does anyone else think that perhaps McCain is actually putting country first here.

In so far as, he's intentionally tanking his own campaign by ramping up all this negativity, thus making it a done deal for Obama to become POTUS.

He's not throwing the campaign. Most 72 year old's don't run for office, he is because he is intent on leaving a legacy as president of the US. He is reverting to negativity because he doesn't care how he gets to be president any more.

Wow. That interview was terrible for McCain. The fact he hired the same guy after making that quote is pretty damning.
