    Thanks for the welcome buddy.

Was just sent on this article by a friend regarding Last.fm.
Today we’re announcing an upcoming change to the way Last.fm Radio
works in some parts of the world. In the United States, United Kingdom
    and Germany, nothing will change.

In all other countries, listening to Last.fm Radio will soon require a
subscription of €3.00 per month. There will be a 30 track free trial,
and we hope this will convince people to subscribe and keep listening
to the radio. Everything else on Last.fm (scrobbling, recommendations,
charts, biographies, events, videos etc.) will remain free in all
    countries, like it is now.

Since we streamed our first track from Last.fm back in 2002, we have
focused on playing the right songs to the right people, compensating
artists for playing their music, and being the best music site on the
web. We appreciate the support we get from the 30 million people who
use Last.fm every month—double the number of people since this time
last year. We work with over 280,000 labels and artists, many of whom
we pay directly, and have built up the largest catalogue of any web
radio platform: over 7 million tracks are available on Last.fm Radio
    stations.

In order to keep providing the best radio service on the web, we need
to ask our listeners from countries other than USA, UK and Germany to
subscribe for €3.00 per month. In return you’ll get unlimited access
to Last.fm Radio, and a promise that we’ll be hard at work improving
the service for years to come.
    Little guys get screwed again.

meh 3 euro is ok to me. I think they provide a fantastic service as it is, it was inevitable that they charge on some of their services. I, for one, dont mind paying the 3 euro monthly to listen to my playlist anywhere in the world from what I play at home.

EDIT: Didnt read it all. Screw them!!!

What's so special about those three countries that they don't have to pay?

I'd say they are their three biggest markets. Probably trying it out on the unimportant people first and then if enough of us pay it they will expand it into those countries.

I wouldnt mind really, Ive paid the sub a good few times before just dont like to be forced into it.

They do provide a brilliant service as was said so cant complain all that much.

    Hmm, that's a surprise.

I don't think it'll affect me too much because I rarely listen to the radio streams.

Heh. I wont pay. If everyone was treated equally then who knows but foolishness on their part if they think I am paying but USA, UK and Germany aren't. I think I am not the only person who thinks this way.

Think Sigur Ros is probably my favourite band. I love everything they've ever done; they're so unique and they really appreciate beauty and know how to put across emotion. Their videos and music are astounding.

They're definitely something special and really set a precedent for new music.

    Also!

For anyone who wants to continue to listen to Last.fm radio (it's actually my primary media player tbh), get a new paypal account and put nothing in it. Then go to subscribe, use that paypal address. You get the subscription without paying-- I haven't paid a dime for my subscription and I've had it nearly 2 months now. Fully functional, my loved tracks and al.

Muwahaha, I get it for free :D ... but I'm already a subscriber anyway. It's worth subscribing to, only the price of a few pints, it's how I find all my new music now. It's a shame they are bringing it in like this as it will probably stop alot of people using the service which will make it less effective for everyone else!

There's something about paying for a service you had for free all along that I simply refuse to do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 598 ✭✭✭IronMan

Instead of paying the €3 a month to Last.fm, you could pay the €3.50 a month to someone like http://www.witopia.net, who will give you a US based VPN/Proxy. You then get access to Last.fm, Pandora, Hulu and loads of other sites. Any site you visit think you are based in the US. Nice.

I'm sure there is other methods that cost nothing, e.g. Tor, but I find this method to be the most reliable and easy to use.

Heard about this fee coming in yesterday. Since I don't use the Radio features much it won't affect me that much really. But just wondering what people think; what are the similar sites coming out to replace them? Apparently there are quite few, some of whom haven't reached Ireland yet.
Will people just quit using the site? I heard there are lots of people across the world furiously closing their accounts because they're so annoyed by this change.

Didnt know about any rivals to Last.Fm coming out. Id be interested to see what they offer.

I cant see any immediate replacement though. Its taken me over two years to build up my profile and start get decent recommendations that are actually new to me. As I dont use the radios that much it would take me alot to cross over to another site.

Spotify is much better for music, it doesn't log your tracks but you can link it to your last fm so it plays the tracks.

If i was to pay either of their subscriptions i'd pay spotify but ways and means and all that...

I absolutely love Last.fm. It's such a pity they got rid of the free radio service - it was really useful. I found some amazing stuff through that. I can see people turning to downloading - legally or not - to get what they want now. Hmmm. Wonder if this will backfire for them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭DenMan

3 euro a month is all they are charging. It's well worth it imo. Works out roughly at 10 cent a day. I'll be subscribing to it. Help them out, it is a great service they provide.

I wouldnt agree with the fees either but its def worth it. I'm forever finding brilliant new music on lastfm even though it creeps me out how accurate it is when recommending stuff

The €3 subscription charge has been postponed for a little while - Click
    Radio Announcement Revisited
    Monday, 30 March 2009

Since our announcement last Tuesday about starting to charge users €3.00 per month for listening to the radio in countries other than the USA, UK and Germany, we’ve received a lot of feedback. It’s not a decision we’ve made lightly, and I want to explain why we came to this conclusion and answer some common questions.

Last.fm Radio has always been ad supported, which means we sell ads on the site to cover the cost of running the service and paying the music licensing fees. If you’ve spent more than 5 minutes on the site you’ll know that the Last.fm community is international to the extreme – we are made up of people from practically every country in the world. Last.fm is a better place for it.

However, we simply can’t be in every country where our radio service is available selling the ads we need to support the service. The Internet is global, and geographic restrictions seem unfair, but it’s a reality we are faced with every day when managing our music licensing partnerships.

We’re listening and we’ve postponed the date on which radio will become a subscription service outside the USA, UK and Germany. In the meantime we’ll be squeezing in some additional improvements based on your requests:

    * Gift subscriptions: you’ll be able to buy a subscription for a friend

    * Updating developers using our Radio API: third-party apps that stream Last.fm Radio will have full access to the Radio API, so streaming will work provided the user that logs in is a subscriber. (All other APIs remain free/unchanged)

    * Investigating alternative payment options. If Paypal sucks in your country, or you don’t have a credit card, don’t despair. Based on feedback so far, we are looking at supporting pay-by-SMS, and possibly some other options. Can’t promise we’ll have support for everyone’s favourite payment system from day one, but we’ll do our best to make it easy for you.

As soon as we’ve completed the upgrades noted above, we’ll move ahead with the transition. Thereafter, radio in the USA, UK and Germany will remain ad-supported, and radio in other countries where it’s not feasible to have an ad-supported service will be moving to a subscription service.

I think I'm going to get as much radio in as possible before it happens :pac:

Um, with the amount of people posting in this thread, surely it would be more effective to create a boards.ie group?

edit: Just checked their site, no existing boards.ie groups :(

edit2: Eh, went ahead and created a boards.ie music forum group (pending Mod approval, of course..)
