..that when I'm in a thread in P.I, I'm confronted by banner ads offering me "Gay Military Men"? What happened to 'don't ask don't tell'?

The Ads correspond with the content in the page, was it a thread about a Ghey Solider?

  • Registered Users Posts: 83,235 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Sometimes they do, but this thread mentions gay soldiers and I don't see any ad's for them?

Ads currently relate to the keywords derived from your hard drive. The more keywords, the more chance of an ad relating to the keyword. Don't shoot the messenger.

yes it does. Some gay military dating site and then something about israeli combat training.

AFAIK Google ads are based on the page keywords.

e.g. keywords for this page are:
    "Why is it..., ireland,irish,chat,forum,forums,bbs,discussion,bulletin board,ask,share,information"

They only take data from your hard drive if you allow cookies in your security settings - and at that there should be no personally identifiable information. At most they can read recent browsing history and send you an ad based on that.

Stay off the ghey military sites and you won't have a problem :).

It's based on the content of the pages. If you have gmail, you would notice that ads above that relate to the content of your emails on that page.

It's a bit scary that no-one here a (relatively internet-savvy bunch of guys)knows how Google generate their ads, considering how prolific those ads are on today's internet.

Because we're too smart to care.

It's not remotely invading anyone's privacy. It picks up on a thread started (for all to see - even if it's googled) and the responses - only the words, not the people, are what generate the ad.

    Jeez. Such paranoia...

I'm guessing it has something to do with the content of the thread.

The nocturnal goth chick pics thread has ads for mail order asian brides thanks to Karl Hungus :D

The ads aren't specific to individual computers.

You sure? I thought the bots & spiders only picked up on page keywords.

Could be wrong though - new and improved bots FTW...

The adds that are on the top of the GMail spam page are generated in a different way and are picked from a small list of real spam recipe links that Google went and manually found specifically just for the add links for those pages.

Google ads are just weird, think Vex is adding that one to the blacklist now.

Free holiday for Overheal as all I seem to see him do in feedback is link to adblock, and that makes me a sad panda :(

Maybe he'll get some adsense now.

I heard that Oxford concluded that the word 'gullible' has no real etymology and removed it from the dictionary.
