If your prepared to spend (and subsequently loose through depriciation) that much money in the current climate ...why wouldn't you go and treat yourself to something actually worth having ...and not a Jetta or Astra saloon ...yikes

At €25k you'll have no trouble finding a very nice top of the range small family saloon.

You can have Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Ghia and €1,555 to spare for your €25k.

The Mazda 3 1.6 D Touring is available for €23,995, and is based on the Focus but the diesel engine in that is far nicer as for some perverse reason Ford doesn't offer this engine in the Focus for Ireland even though most of the rest of Europe gets it while we're lumbered with an engine well past its sell by date.

At a shade over €25k(€25,350 to be exact) you can have the Opel Astra 1.7 CDTi 100 bhp Design. The 1.4 hatchback is a lovely car, and I'm sure that a high spec more powerful diesel is better still.

The Toyota Corolla 1.4 D-4D Luna is yours for €23,760 but it has a fair bit less power than the other cars mentioned and is quite basic inside too. It's not exactly great value for money, and feels as cheap as chips inside in it. I don't think it's very fast either for that matter.

Lastly we have the Jetta which retails for €25,485 in the basic 1.9 TDI, making it the most expensive and even poorer value for money than the Corolla. The 1.9 is a complete tractor of an engine, but the killer blow for the Jetta is that the Golf on which it's based is going to be replaced by a heavily revised model with lower CO2 emissions, and the larger Passat in identical spec is €28,775, but has things like an electric hand brake that the Jetta doesn't have. The Passat has ESP too, something I'm 99% sure the Jetta doesn't have either.

Don't bother with petrol whatever you're getting, even though petrol is far nicer to drive than diesel you'll pay a lot more to buy it in the case of the Focus, and then there's all that extra fuel costs, road tax and of course depreciation to consider.

In short you'll save a packet by buying diesel.

There a fast car, roughly 250-270 bhp on a few standard ones. Not a fan though.

What the mod is saying is that the 2 cars you mentioned are rubbish.

When you buy the Astra its resale value will be half what u payed within 6 months.

When you say "new car" do you mean an new 08 car or a second hand car?

Anyone who thinks either car the OP mentioned is rubbish has clearly never been in one.

The Jetta is very poor on the value for money count though.

Oh and for the benefit of those posting about the Scooby, the OP said he wanted a *new* *saloon* car in 2009.

Having said all that there are far more exciting things out there than a small family saloon available for €25k(such an the Scooby or Audi A6 3.0 TDI, BMW 530d, Lexus IS etc) it's fairly obvious the OP isn't interested in that since the OP wants a new saloon.

This part confuses me as I've seen many posters post about "buying a new car", when its actually a second hand car

Dont see anywhere on here where he mentions 2009? Or even if he's after a brand spanking new car.

;) If he wants a second hand car then he should mention second hand, but few posters here do.

The Renault Mégane is due an imminent replacement.

The A3 is a Golf that allows you to tell your mates that you've blown a needless amount of extra cash just so you can say "I have an Audi".

The Golf and A3 have 5 doors as they're hatchbacks.

For €27k you can move upmarket and get the stunning new Opel Insignia 2.0 diesel for €27,495(I know it doesn't say it there in the link but the the 2.0 diesel is €1k more than the underpowered 1.6 petrol). You could get a Mondeo 1.8 TDCi LX for €26,665 as well but you'd have a huge car with only 100 bhp and the basic model.

There is so many good cars available at the mement for €25k. Do you really want to take the depreciation hit of a new car and pass up the thousands of bargains that are around at the moment?:confused:

If I had 25k and was looking for a new car (never brand new) this is where I would be heading. So much more of a car than a Jetta or an Astra. Just test drive a few cars before you make up your mind.

OP you need to note that both the Astra and Jetta are being replaced by new models in the next 12 months. Should be considered when buying new.

OP your probably not interested but €25k would get you a low mileage 8 month old high spec Honda Accord 2.2 diesel from the UK with change left over. Road tax is only €290 annually afaik.

Alternatively if the Accord is a non runner then the Civic saloon is available at just under €27k new here.

Would be better to get something new and fresh like either of the above IMO, if you insist on a "new" car. Both push the budget a bit tho.
