Another question, slightly completely different. Been watching vids, reading a bit and listening to djs at work to pick up tips. Going to put that into practice when I get the chance.
Music wise though, a lot of the artists that get mentioned on here i've never heard of. So where (other than here obviously) do you go to explore dance music and narrow down your own taste? Any sites you would reccomend going on to learn more about different genres and good artists in that respective genre?

My favourite way to find new music is to download BBC Essential mixes of artists you like, and there's sure to be a good few tracks you won't know, and will like on them. The tracklistings are all on the bbc site, so it's really easy to find the tracks. You can also do the same with live sets that are on download all over the net.

You can also look up charts from artists you like, they usually put up a monthly chart of their favourite tunes on myspace, beatport, or their website.

Looking up different artists on the same label as the ones you like is also a good way to find new tunes.

Those tenminmixes on youtube also sometimes have some good tunes.

    Beatport.com :)

But just to let you know, all the good stuff that is mentioned here isnt what will be played on an average night. Certain nights specialising in a certain genre can get away from the chart but most of us(Not there yet:p) end up playing the likes of Mr.Gaga, its what the punter wants to hear, unfortunately.
Have heard of that but thought it was just a music download site and that was it.
Oh and lord I know that, I started a thread a while back about playing for the punter with the top 30 "hits". It is something I've thought about, when the time comes to progress to the next step do I want to try and become a commercial DJ to cater to crowds I dont want to or what alternative is there for a guy living in Sligo/Galway where the demand for dance music is not great. Rant over. But it is something that taints the joys of being practising tbh, that it could be all to play the latest ****e.

Sweet man cheers looking at the essential mixes now and going to give them a listen.
Started a myspace but give up with it cos the whole reliance on flash is doing my head in. Beatport sounds like a solid choice though will give that a look.
    Cheers for the replies btw.

What kind of music are you into? Maybe we could give you some suggestions?

God help me after this. Well I like AVB, Ferry Corsten, Gabriel and Dresden, Sean Tyas, Cosmic Gate, Marco V, Marcel Woods, Yoji Biomehanika, Deadmau5, Prodigy. To be honest thats just a snippet of the artists i like that i can think of and covering the wide range of music. I got into dance music because of mates that liked dance ( the stuff you'd find on a gatecrashers classis album) so i'm looking to fine tune my musical taste and wondering the best avenues to do that.

Hey guys, I started djing recently just as a hobby really, I have a very basic setup, it is a numark CM100 mixer and numark CDN35 decks, I was using a stereo as my sound output for a long time but it's broke at the moment so I am going to buy speakers to use instead of it but i haven't a clue what kind of speakers to buy!I only want something very cheap as it is really only a hobby and argos do lots of different speaker systems for around 30 - 50 euro. Can I simply buy any sort of speakers as long as they have a cd player input or is there a specific set i should be looking for?Any help would be great, thanks!

Maybe start a thread asking for suggestions? Can't really help, I'm more into the electro-house/dubstep side of things.

I love trance aswell mate, I got into it about 5 years ago, like you I started off with buying cds such as gaterasher, godskitchen, mix albums etc. but tbh you are at nothing buy just buying the odd cd, you should join websites such as "theclubbingforum" and "trance.nu" where you can find links to great sets, tune into online dance stations, keep an eye on the dance charts on websites like "djtunes" and subscribe to different dance labels on youtube, you will find some little gems, there is so much rubbish been produced aswell these days but you will soon find hundreds of tunes you love! I'm not spamming btw, they are brilliant websites and I use them all the time!

Stay away from those E50 yokes in Argos, if you have any kind of an ear on you it'll be horrible.

A pair of small monitors like so: http://www.thomann.de/ie/behringer_ms16.htm would probably serve you well ,

Or a decent Hifi, and much as I hate to say it go Sony for this. If you had a wad of cash I'd say a bigger brand like Technics etc etc but for the midrange stuff I've heard Sony excell. You'll wanna spend over 100 though. We have 3 Sony units in the house, mine [CMT NE3] cost 130, and two others which cost 110. The difference in quality is huge. That said price and quality dont always coralate.

Actually, third option: Salvage speakers + PC Sub.
I found an old unused pair of 75W mitsu's buried behind a stage. Fronts were knackered but so what, ripped them off. Little black spray on the four sides, left the front in its natural state. Look damn good for free speakers:) They're running of a 150W(I think) Lamtech PC Subwoofer that I got off a friend who works in a large company, it was an old unit they were dumping. All my gaming stuff is run through them and its perfect. Little more time intensive but great value:)

Don't know much about the toneport, but it looks like you might be able hook it up with USB, and then take two channels either out of the line ins or the guitar ins...I don't know if that'll work the same as a regular soundcard or not though.

You can take it straight out of your audio out, but you can't use an external mixer that way, but it's fine if you want to use your software's internal faders and EQs with a MIDI controller. That might have a difference in sound quality than taking it out of USB, but I need verification on that...

    Hi

I'm going to purchase the Vestax VCI 300:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/vestax_vci300.htm

I also intend purchasing a set of speakers:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/krk_rp5_g2_rokit.htm (2 of these)

I'm not completely sure what cables or splitters I need to hook my controller up to these speakers (Not buying an amp).
Could somebody point me in the right direction and the best quality wires to purchase?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

You need to connect the first pair of RCA's to the speakers, the second pair are your monitor(headphones).

The G2s take RCA inputs so a Ssnake RCA X2 to RCA X2 cable is all you need. Be aware though that this is unbalanced and as such you'll want to keep it away from sources of interference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,273 ✭✭✭EuskalHerria

just wondering does anyone have ear moulds made and are they reccomended? I read somewhere that some people actually wear them when they are going to nightclubs just for a night out.

Whats sort of things would cause interference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Technically everything electrical causes interference to some degree, but its the big culprits that you want to avoid. 240V Power cables(like the ones into the back of your PC and monitor(s)), light fixtures in some cases, guitar tubes I think, anything with large capicitors. Basically just take the outs from the controller and run them up one side of the desk and around to the monitors. Then turn 'em on but run no signal through them(volume up though). If there is very noticeable noise you should do some cable tidying.

    Hi guys,

I tried last year to get up and running on the Numark D2 but my pc of the time told me it would take Librarian 3 weeks (yes!!!) to process all my music. I had to abondon doing that because I just couldn't hog the computer for 3 weeks. Unfortunately on my Lacie external hard drive I have a lot of music that's in all sorts of different formats (mp3, mp4, flac, ogg, aac, apple lossless) and I'm worried this could pose a problem. I'll be using a Macbook and my external hard drive (and probably not my iphone) for djing.

Librarian was just such a headache last time that I was wondering if anyone had any advice on any other programs I should put my music through to eliminate any problems with Librarian or make the process faster. I'd like to be able to see as much info on the songs I'm mixing as possible on the viewer on the Numark D2. Thanks!!! Sian

    What's wrong with iTunes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭sian

thanks for the reply. Apparently to use the Numark D2 u must put your music through Librarian first. :-( only way to properly see the info u need on the songs

I imagine the Numark will still read the ID3 tags, so possibly any software that edits ID3 tags will work, iTunes included?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭sian

as far as i know yes. it's give me the track name and artist, but if i want other into like dynamics, bpm etc, gotta use Librarian.

That info is probably still stored in the tag data, but even if you could find out where, you'd still need to scan it with a BPM analyzer anyways.

All in all, you need a faster way of doing it. What spec machine are you doing it on? If you used a quad you could put it on cores 3 and 4 and leave it going for three or four days in the background. How many tracks are we talking about?

Just wondering what programme you use to burn cds? I'm cracking up that some of my disc burnt on itunes are being burned as VBR and others aren't and I cant seem to find much info on how I might be able to change the settings.

I suppose nero would be best but thought itunes would be handier, obviously not as i'm trying to organise my music collection before i go back to college.

Are they VBR in the collection before you burn them? If they are they'll burn that way, but if they're not then I can't see any reason why they should change when you're burn them...(Just realised, are you talking about importing them or ripping them to blank CDs?)

Practice. It's the only way. Watch the videos on technique on youtube, get that down with practice. Then, download a load of mixes by your favourite DJs, live sets, essential mixes, and listen to how they mix their tunes, maybe try and copy them on your decks, and get your own style by blending all your influences together.

If you don't have much of a budget I wouldn't say theres any point throwing away money on gear that you're going to upgrade in a few months anyway. Virtual DJ is far from professional, I wouldn't really recommend it. You'd be better saving up a bit longer and getting Traktor or Serato. It's a bit more expensive, but in the long run it's cheaper than buying Virtual DJ and then Traktor.

The mixer is a decent idea, although another option would be to get a soundcard and a cheap, non USB mixer. That way you could use the venue's mixer if you're playing out, which would be a lot better than that Numark.

All in one MIDI controllers are another route you could go down, there's a load of threads on MIDI controllers, just do a quick search.

The ones that were VBR I converted with a programme and then burned them, they were still reading as VBR, but I'm using Nero now so thats going better.
Was wondering though does anyone use any other programme and does burn speed really matter?

    Hi

I just bought the Vestax VCI300:

    And the following powered monitors(2):
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/krk_rp6_rokit_g2.htm

I was wondering if it would be possible and better to connect TRS/Balanced cables between my controller and speakers?

If yes, could you provide me with some links or ideas of exactly what I need to get?

    Thanks in advance.

The primary out on the VCI a pair of 1/4" Mono TRS jacks and there is a TRS in on each speaker. Job done. Just make sure you buy mono leads:)

That thread basically says the same as I'll say, which is I'd recommend getting a mixer, a soundcard, and a controller instead of using an all-in-one controller.

Good 2 channel soundcard is the Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ, there's a rake of cheap mixers around, Numark and Behringer ones especially, and controllers go from as cheap as the Korg Nano range, or a cheap MIDI keyboard like an M-Audio Oxygen 8, to something like an Evolution UC33e, to the newly released NI Traktor Kontrol X1, all the way up to the expensive Allen & Heath Xone range. They all do exactly the same thing, just with different amounts of knobs/faders/buttons, and different quality ranges.

Have a look at them all and see what you like, a quick search on Thomann.de under DAW controllers will give you a list.

The benifits of this set-up over an all-in-one are:
    1) Easy upgrade potential
    2) Ability to use the DJM-800 when playing in a club, which is much better quality then an all-in-one controller
    3) Can be tailored to your own personal preference
    4) In general will be better quality than something like a Hercules

Using the VCI, there would be no point using the XLRs as far as I know. The VCI does TRS and RCA and the Rokits take TRS and XLR, so TRS is the logical choice.

I'm usually the one answering the questions here, but this time I've a question.

Can anyone reccommend a 4 stereo channel interface? i.e. one with 4 pairs of RCA outputs? The only one I can find is the Audio 8 DJ, and I'm looking to see if there's a cheaper option.

This isn't really a DJing or production question, but I reckoned this would be the best place to ask.

I'm looking for a little mixer. I'm a guitar player primarily, I've got a rake of pedals, and what I want to do is take signals other than my guitar and route them into my pedal board, so I could play with different sounds using my guitar gear (My favourite idea is to sample and pitch shift a singer's voice, much like this). I know nowt about mixers, I was hoping there'd be a way I could have this all on my pedal board, without interrupting the guitar's signal chain, and I don't have to unplug stuff to start processing other signals.

I'm looking at things like t h e s e. Cheap and probably awful, but as this isn't gonna be anywhere near a cornerstone of my 'rig' (just a bit of fun for one or two songs), so I'm hesitant to put a lot of money on it.

What does anyone think of this? If I could get a cheapo 4 channel mixer that would achieve this, and handle my keyboard and laptop as well, that would be the best. Thanks guys.

:) Ok Lads I am Fifty..... I have prused the threads here and I am still lost.

I understand technology has passed me out, but I have most of the equipment for the last 3 months and have never used it publically. I have been offered 2 gigs a week in my local establishments but I am afraid I will make a mess of it.

Dont get me wrong I have the bottle, just a bit naive in terms of technology:mad:.

I was Joint DJ of the year with Garett O Callaghan in 1982......So I am good at waffling. Also I need the money badly.

I hope you can reply in lay terms to my questions, I really would appreciate your help.

I purchased a newmark mixer (4 channell) with combined twin cd decks, speakers, a monitor for karaoeke a 1000 watt amp, and all the usual stuff including a separate direct live recording machine.

I also purchased the laptop software and 30.000 songs and karaoke music on a separate hard disc.

The chap who sold me the stuff told me to use Nordbeat software for mp3's , which only plays one song at a time. If required I can switch to Karaoeke by using winanp? This is all very confusing to me, even when practising on the rig. My output to the amp comes from my "headphone" socket on the mixer!!

I dont think that is the proper way of setting it up but the chap who sold me the gear says thats the way he was using it.

What I really would like would be able to que up 2 songs at a time (not one) and also switch to Karaoeke when required with ease. And lastly I would like a True sound pumping out from the speakers.

The gigs I have are in the 30 to 60 age group so I will not require much intricate mixing or using jog wheels etc.

I really would appreciate your help with the above so I can go out a make a few bob without worrying that I cant master the tech stuff.

Thanking you for reading my post anyhow.

I was well known in the 80's media wise, so its a big come down for me to have to nearly beg for help, but to be honest sitting here is not paying the bills.

    Cheers:P:cool:

Do you mean to use this software for playing non-kareoke songs? Why not just use the CD decks and only use the software for karaoke?

I don't know much about karaoke, but to me it sounds like what you need to do is put the CD decks through 2 channels on the mixer, and then get an audio interface like the NI Audio 2 DJ so you can take 2 channels out of the laptop for kareoke and put them through channels 3+4 of the mixer. Then you take the master RCA output from the back of the mixer to the amp.

I've no idea about kareoke software, maybe they don't need 2 channels, in which case you could just get a 3.5mm line-in to RCA cable and take it from your line-out on your laptop to a channel on the mixer.

    Agree with above.

On the headphone jack thing, thats wrong. From what I know the impedances/voltages on line out and monitor are different, and thats gonna destroy the volume controls on your mixer as the monitor has one master volume, while normally you have the two sliders for volume. You should be using line out from the mixer to the amp. I'll do a rough sketch of the connections now, but if you could post the make/model of all your different bits and pieces it would help us to help you.

If you use PCDJVJ on your computer(not to dear I think) you can select karaoke mode and use two "decks", but without a controller you would be fading from song to song with a mouse/trackpad.

If this was a problem you could get something really simple like a Korg NanoKontrol and map it to whatever controls you needed.

Appreciate all your answers, but I am a little bit confused. I will post all of my equipment later, maybe you will get a better idea.

    Thanks

44th, you seem reasonably aware of what's out there right now:

A few things to think about:

Some "controllers" have a sound card incorporated. Others just control.

If you were to get a copy of ableton live lite (often comes free with controllers), you could use your computer's internal soundcard and control that software even just using the mouse.

The uc33e will work with traktor pro etc, and anything with midi-mapping ability.

Don't get too hung up on which controllers to buy: you wont notice much difference as a beginner. Once you get into it a bit, you can upgrade pretty cheaply.
I'd spend more time worrying about which software you'd like to use, and what soundcard you'd like to have. These two you'll find use for, on into the future, if they're good at the start.

And don't completely discount decks, when you have money in the future. There are many benefits's to having hardware setups, still. Might not be your bag, but it's worth having a go, to see.

It depends on the decks. Look up the specs of any decks before you buy them to make sure they do. The higher end ones should all play them though.
