    Mornin folks,
    I have a '01 Passat TDI.
At times, when idle, the rev counter goes from 800rpm to 1000rpm for about 5-10 seconds. It then goes back to 800rpm.
I have the car about 3 or 4 months and have only noticed it the past week or so. Can't say if it's being doin' that since I got the car.
Anyone shed any light on this, is it normal?
    Thanks.

Not normal, I wouldnt say its anything major, probably an air intake or air flow problem, however if it is and air problem it will escalate to the point where you car cuts out will driving around. You should get it checked using a Diagnostic computer at a VW dealer.

Could easily be something as simple as a dirty throttle body - its an easy DIY job you could do and see if it solves it.

Fairly common problem,it will either be a coolant temp sensor or fuel temp sensor, the coolant temp sensor is common enough failure the fuel would be rarer and might haven happened if the previous owner had one of those dodgy ebay tuning boxes fitted,if you go to VW for a scan be sure to bring some protection and KY! what part of the country are you in? if you sign up to vagdrivers.net there will msot likely soemone in your area with vag com to scan it for you.

    Hope that helps.

My money would be on coolant temp sensor for what its worth.

I dont know of anyone in galway with one off the top of my head but im sure there is,alternatively you can pic k up a vag com lead for 30 or 40 euro on ebay, plug it into your laptop and scan it your self-VW are going to charge you atl east that for the pleasure. If you are anyway handy with PCs its QED.

Thats exactly what you need, the unlicensed version is limited in what it can do,but you can scan for faults and reset them,i would also advise signing up to one of the passat specialist forums in the uk and searching for how to guides on changing the relevent sensor, both of the are fairly easy job to do,if not a little messy.

If you need any help with vag com when you get it drop me a pm,the less money we give VW dealers the better - thats my motto! :D
