Travelling to Athy for a few days next month. Any ideas on interesting places around to see / visit? Good pub grub / cafes?

There's the Motte at Ardscull, up the road towards Kilcullen.
There's a museum in the centre of the town which might be of interest.
If you want to travel a little further afield, Kildare Town has the outlet village, Japanese Gardens and National Stud. There are a few more ideas here http://www.kildare.ie/Tourism/towns/athy.asp
    Hope that helps!

There are other places within striking distance of Athy, but what someone would recommend depends on how long you're staying there, where your coming from and all that!

Can be difficult. I think you'd be better sticking to the roads. :p

Sorry to hear that, Berlin - are the paths not well maintained?

maybe not cycling-a river walk maybe your better option. The paths there are maintained. As well as the river you could definately walk/cycle the canal. it's in the southern side of town crossing the kilkenny road. this walk is great-done it plenty of times myself. Clancy's Bar in town for a good mix of ppl. They were featured on BBC recently actually. La Scala italian restaurant didn't get a great write up in the irish times "Go" magazine about six or seven weeks ago but i think its a fine spot for a town of athy's size. Let us know how the trip goes.

You can cycle along the canal to Vicarstown which is a nice little village, theres an aquaduct on route where the canal passes over a tributary of the Barrow.

As cabra64 said; the Barrow heading south is better for walking but I cycle it regularly and find it OK.
Carlow, Leighlinbridge, Bagenalstown depending how far you want to go.

Clancys is a fine pub, also Frank O Briens in the Square and William Doyles in Woodstock St are the genuine old style pubs.

Moat of Ardschull is famous as the starting point for the Gordon Bennett rallys.
