Advice on getting a new pup?

    Hey everyone,
I have an 18month old german shepherd who we love dearly. And we have now decided, after much thought, that we'd like to adopt a dog.

I saw lab puppies who need homes. I would love to take one but my dilemma is I work full-time(8-4) and my bf is a plumber who works on my estate so he's home for lunch etc. but sometimes he is sent elsewhere.

My german shep is totally adjusted to this and gets his 45 min walk when we get home along with lots of love.

Do you all think it would be ok to bring this baby home?

Our dog has the garden and shed to himself when we are gone with beds and food and toys in it,so it's not like he's left out in the rain.

Is this a good or bad enviroment for a new pup?

    ANy advice appriciated!

Don't see why not, just be careful with introductions to your other dog and not sure it would be a good idea at first to leave them together unsupervised, mainly because the GSD is a big dog and could accidently hurt the pup. I have a medium and small dog and have to be careful when they are running about that they don't collide. Ok lab will be bigger eventually but initially just keep an eye.

No harm in puppy classes as well they will be able to advise you on little things that could possibly arise as the pup gets older and the two try to figure out who's boss.

Those hours aren't too bad at the end of the day if people don't work it's harder to pay for important vet bills etc.

I disagree with GPR. Although I rehome to full time workers, I would not do so with a pup. A pup needs alot of time and energy, socialisation, training. And especially now with the days getting shorter there simply wouldn't be enough time in your day to care for a pup as well.

I think it would be fine for an adult dog but like EGAR said pups need so much care, they can't really be left alone for more than an hour or two and it's also be better to supervise the two dogs together as their can be scraps.

would you consider adopting an older dog? maybe even just 5 months + so they will be a bit more grown up than a helpless 8wk old pup or whatever.

    Thanks for all your replies.

Think we are exploring the thought of an older dog now as We agreed it was unfair on a pup to be left alone.
