    Morning all,

Yesterday about 6.30 I was driving the back road from Clonmel to Carrick and just as I entered the 50km zone (outskirts of Carrick on the Waterford side of the river) I noticed a bunch of kids surrounding a cat looking worried.

I hopped out of the car and the poor thing was howling. At first glace, female cat, about 6-9 months old mostly whitle short hair with black piebald patches. (sorry, didn't get a picture at the time - things moved to quickly)

Anyway - she had a bad gash to the back of her head and a damaged lower jaw, also her front legs were very sensative. She took a bit of coaxing but despite the pain when I had her in my arms she purred - a wonderfully good natured cat despite what she'd been through.

She looked in a fairly bad way - I would say she was a house cat who strayed - looked to be living rough for a few weeks from the condition of her coat but was well used to humans. I checked with some neighbouring houses and none of them recognised her so I told the kids which vet I was taking her to and popped her in the cat.

She's now in Suirside vets (on the Clonmel Road) and I'll be checking on her later in the morning. If anyone is missing a cat from this area - I saw nothing life-threatening in her injuries so please contact me or Suirside Vets.

If no-one claims her - she will make a wonderful pet - as I said - to be so good natured even when injured is a sign of a really well dispositioned cat. If anyone can offer her a good home again, please contact me.

    Thanks!

    xxxx Kate

    quick update

Just got through to the vet - he thinks she may have been in the engine of a cat and possibly travelled some distance.

Her injuries are not as bad as first seemed - she took a bit of a knock to the head but she should recover fine. She's quite happy in her pen today and he's going to monitor her during until tomorrow morning.

I've said I'll cover the cost of any treatment she needs but the main concern now is finding her home, or finding her a new home.

I would happily take her in but I have three already and the biggest (a 7 year old Maine Coon) is already neurotic over the new interlopers (we now have a 6-7month boy and a 4-5 month girl cat - both since barely weaned kittens - so they're not exactly new -she's just a grump!)

So if anyone knows someone looking for a lovely cat to make their life complete... at a push I could bring her home for a day or two - but anymore would be too upsetting for my own.

I'll get a picture this evening when I pop up to see her.

    PM me if interested.

    xxx Kate

Maybe print off some posters and see if you can get some help to put them up in the Clonmel area. Its quite likely the cats owner is missing her so it would be good to try to find them first, rather than going to the effort of finding a new home.

Well done on all your efforts - you are very kind to take on the little thing and hopefully the expenses won't be too bad.

I figured I'd do a ring around the vets in the Clonmel area for missing animals and also I've posted on various Tipperary Boards.
I've placed a 'found' ad on irishanimals and have also dropped an email to tippfm for community announcements. I'm going to give Cottage Rescue a call and see if they've had anyone looking for their cat.

Chances are though, given the potential distance the cat has travelled that it will be very hard to find her family.

We've successfully nursed back to health and re-homed a good number of cats, on top of our own three 'full-timers' and all were rescued. I know it takes quite a while to find a home for anything bigger than the "bundle-of-fluff" kitten so I figured I'd get the ball rolling now and if we find the original family in the mean time well and good.

thanks for words of support - I also hope the vets bills aren't too high (Especially as one of my own is down for neutering next week!) but either way it's worth it.

Well done. Put a photo up on http://www.irishanimals.com too, why don't you - and mention that she might have been in the engine of a car. (A friend of a friend had a cat (+RIP+) called Transit that made several trips like that.)

    Morning Beaushalloe,

The Maine Coon is a re-home - we got to know a lovely lady in one of the local vets - she breeds them and Genevieve was her leading lady. Maine Coon's take a long time to recover after giving birth - it takes a lot out of them so when Gen had her last litter in November (at seven) her owner decided to retire her. Once she was neutered she lost her standing in the colony and became upset.

Her owner just wanted a good home for her where she could rule the roost and we were looking for a 'full timer' and she was ideal. She's a grump a lot of the time and doesn't have a lot of time for the 'youngsters' that would be passing through our house to new homes so we settled on a full time cast of three.

Maine Coons - I can't recommend them highly enough as additions to your family. They are vastly intelligent and really are the gentle giants of the feline world. If your really interested check out the Maine Coon Association/Owners Club on the internet and get to know some of the people involved. Apparently what happened to Genevieve is quite common so you might get lucky!

A warning though, Maine Coons take very special care. Their jaws are so strong they don't chew normal food - they just swallow it (much like a dog) so you *have* to buy them specialist food - RC do a Maine Coon food - you're looking at €20 for a 2kg bag! (does about 15 days)

You also need to groom everyday (not a hardship - literally a quick brush each evening will do and you'll be rewarded with the most beautiful liquid purrs you've ever heard) and they need to be shampoo'd every month or so. (they have two coats - a waterproof one and an top coat that can get quite greasy - again they're good with water so it's no hardship - we have to keep the bathroom door closed when having a shower as Gen will dive-bomb into the bath! It takes ages to get her dry!)

They are also prone to kidney problems and a fair number of other issues so you need to read up and be prepared that there may be extra vet's visits needed.

Seriously though - worth every bit of it - she's an absolute joy!

(also great when people come into the house for the first time and see her -"OMG what is THAT?! )

This is her staking a claim to the kittens house!

thanks for that wow she looks beautiful! i lost my own baby to the road on tuesday so im not ready yet for a new baby. i had a persian a couple of years and prior to getting him i had done a little research on the main coon but could not find any info in ireland so thats why i went with the persian. unfortunately he tooo suffered an untimely end, a dog jumped into our garden and he got such a fright he suffered a heart attack. the local vet said that this was common in pedigree animals so i was a bit wary this time and just went with a domestic puss (whom i adored)

hope your getting somewhere with your poor rescue buddy.

    So here she is!

Not the best photos but here we go:

    We've called her Dolly (because she's a temp!)(9-5?)

So she's quite underweight and is very irritated around the ears but she has antibiotics and with some TLC she'll be right as rain in no time!

Good signs are that her lungs and nose are clear and she's got a great appetite.

She's curled up on the sofa right now having a well earned rest with a lovely full belly :)

    I'll keep you all posted

    xxx Kate

    Afternoon all,

Quick update on Dolly - she'd doing very well and is just a little darling.

She's wants nothing more than a lap to lie on and some rubs on her belly.

    dollyib0.th.jpgthpix.gif

Now she's looking for a good home so if you'd like to help out - please PM me. Dolly is quite nervous around other cats - she's slowly getting used to my three but isn't very happy about having to. I think she'd suit being a pampered single cat, or perhaps with one other cat given time. She'll follow you round at your ankles until you sit down and let her jump up!

The picture (again) doesn't do her justice - her eyes are simply stunning and remind me of Duchess in the Aristocats *grin*

She really deserves a good home so please ask around! We'll continue to look after her until a new home is found - but I'm hoping it'll be quick as my own are quite stressed out now - they're not reacting well to her nervousness around them.

    Thanks again xxx Kate

Aww she's gorgeous! I'd LOVE to take her, but unfortunately I live in a tiny house on a busy road :( Just wouldn't be fair ....

Are you keeping her indoors at the moment? And do you think she was an outdoor cat in her previous home?

Try posting her up on irishanimals and petsireland too ....

    Hi Themadhouse,

Isn't this just the smallest world? - our Gen (Rumtumtugger Genevieve) is indeed your boys mammy - we got her from S. back in February when her mammy-days were done. Now she's house-mammy. I've seen some pics of her kittens and they're amazing.

On the other girl - Dolly - and to answer Glowing's question - I can't tell if she was an outdoors cat previously. She's very happy indoors and hasn't scratched at a door once or even hopped on a counter to look out a window. That might be nerves still, but she's happy to move from bedroom to spare bedroom to sitting room - wherever there's a soft surface to curl up on! Our two youngest furs are fully indoor - they will go outside when they're older but it's another few months off yet so she's got her paws full during the day avoiding ambushes.

    xxxk
