I have 2mb BB with eircom, but i really can only seem to download 235Kbs/sec at max.

Is this about right, or am i getting a crap service?

Speed test comes back with a 1770kb/sec down and 196kbit/sec upload speed.

    My router states:

    Downstream Upstream
Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 2048 256
    SN Margin (dB) 12.00 12.00
    Line Attenuation (dB) 62.50 31.50
    CRC Errors 2 1

Anyone know if this all looks good?

Thats as good as you'll get on a 2 meg connection and with those line stats you won't be going any higher either I'm afraid.

your upload Attenuation looks a bit high ?

could call eircom and ask them to check your line for you. do you have anything else plugged in ? phones sky etc.

they are pretty good speeks alright.

Look closer. I think youll find that its 235KB/s (big 'B' for bytes - not small 'b' for bits).

That looks about right for a 2Mb line. With ADSL - the IP throughput you see is about 10-15% less than your line's sync speed (which is 2048 Kbps).

Thanks for the infos... just wanted to be sure im getting what im paying for! :D

Nothing else plugged into the line, except for home phone base station which has a filter.

Also thanks for the B/b info... i didnt know that.

Sorry to ask a complete newbie question here,,, but should it not be a case that if i have 2MB BB.... i should be getting download speeds when downloading files from the net at approx 2048 Kbps?

Just after checking eircoms own speed test and it show.... Result: 1468kbps

So why am i only getting 235Kbps at maximum

    Youre not - your getting 235KBps :)

    There are 8 'b'its in a 'B'yte.

    235 * 8 = ~1880Kbps (small b) - which is much closer to your lines sync speed.

You will not get 2048Kbps of IP traffic over an ADSL line synced at 2048Kbps. The simple way of describing this is 'protocol overhead'.

You just need to accept that there is some extra work involved in getting the internet to you over your phoneline which results in a small loss of efficiency.

Your line is working as well as a 2Mb ADSL line can work!
