Following Dublin Youth Theatre’s recent successful Dublin Fringe Festival 2008 production We’re Not Real, DYT announces the production of the English language premiere of Daily Bread by Gesine Danckwart, directed and translated by former Irish Times Theatre Award Best Director nominee Rachel West.

Gesine Danckwart's play Daily Bread is a polyphony for several voices about jobs and careers, about the individual and how they can maintain their identity without going under in the competitive arena. Their inner monologues sometimes venture out from deep within, occasionally developing into dialogue as they reach out for a soul mate, but at the decisive moment break off for fear of disappointment. Cast adrift in their own conscience, these intelligent and witty singles provoke a series of dynamics ranging from thoughtful silence to hectic activity. Most of them apply themselves to the frustrations and victories of earning their crust, but their isolation preys on their minds, blocked spirits are worn down by banalities as their everyday stories circle around the struggle for a sense of self-worth and success.

Speaking about the forthcoming production Director Rachel West said, "We chose Daily Bread because we knew it would be a challenge. A challenge to me as a director, to the members of DYT and hopefully also a stimulating
challenge to our audiences. Gesine Danckwart wrote this play when she was
the same age as the DYT members, and I think it is a time in our lives when
the future may seem open, but one questions the immediate constraints that
the adult world of work and ambition puts on the individual. Danckwart's
play is not guided by a strong plot line but is more a mood board of moments
and inner monologues which, I hope, will allow the young cast have their own
creative input in creating a production which truly reflects the uniqueness
    of Dublin Youth Theatre."

Lighting by Pan Pan Co-founder and director Aedín Cosgrove and costume and set design by Alyson Cummins who was nominated for the Linbury Biennial Prize for Stage Design last year.
