Temporary filling that you buy in the chemist:Is it any good?

I have managed to break a filling I had in a back tooth and it is incredibly sore now. I can't go to a dentist this week as I've something very important on that I can't get out of. Is the temporary filling you buy in a tube in the chemist any good or will I just be making things worse by trying it?
    Any opinions or experience appreciated.

It is a handy temporary solution. At least it keeps crap away from the insides of the tooth until you can get to dentist.

My husband used stuff from boots, don't remember the brand anymore. It was kind of like a little kit.

I have some in a hole in tooth right now. Its great stuff, it can last for weeks/months depending what tooth it is.

Is there not a risk that teh decay will get worse under the filling, seeeing as it hasnt been drilled out?

It is only meant as a temporary solution. Something to make you feel a little more comfortable until your dentist's appointment.

Just skipping going to the dentist would be quite irresponsible.
