    Hi,

I have a 01 320ci. Recently the handbrke has started to deteriorate rapidly to the point now that it will barley hold on even the slightsest hill.
Does anyone know roughly the cost to get repaire or a new one ?

    Thanks

Err..you need to replace either the pads or the drums is all.. (not sure which it is on that particular car)

Thanks but is that expensive ?

It could also be the handbrake cable stretched and ready to snap.

Worth getting this checked ASAP. could be expensive if the car rolled down a hill and into something.

Have a look at getting the cable tightened...usually over time the tension slackens, hence a loss of effectiveness down to a point where it barely holds on a hill, if even, and it requires adjustment. Simple job which takes all of about 5 or 10 minutes. Id do that before changing the drums!

I would hope that one would park in gear while this problem was happening!

Hopefully it does just need tightening as Celtic Mech says.

Yes, and it's also good to have the front wheels pointing in towards the kerb when parked.

Unless someone has driven with the handbrake on the drums / shoes should be ok. Remember the drums & small shoes are only used for the handbrake so should have very little wear on them.

The first thing you should do is make sure the shoes are adjusted correctly for each of the rear wheels ( haynes manual tells you how to do this )...

Then if no improvement is found try adjusting the cable, again the haynes manual will also tell you how to do this too.

Note:- take care when jacking up the car to adjust the rear shoes, you'll need to have the handbrake off, so the front wheels need to be chocked very well.
