im thinking of moving to O2 to avail of their free texts deal for 20 a month
im currently with 3 and have a three number (and phone)
it says on the O2 website i can keep my number if i ring them they will "port" it and i can then use it
does this mean once this is done i can use my 3 phone with the o2 sim card without having to unlock it ect?
    thanks
    cian

no you'll have to get the phone unlocked because o2 will give you an o2 sim card with your number on it. The fact that you number might start with 083 is irrelevant, you'll be an o2 customer

call 3 and ask for your unlock code but they won't give it to you unless you've spent 130 euro in credit. If they won't do it you might be able to get it unlocked somewhere else depending on the make and model

yeah i thought so thanks for confirming :)
i might just buy a new phone alltogether as my ones quite old now
if i do and i keep my number (do they do that in the shop?) will i still get free credit and whatnot?
